Metal-ceramic composites possess a wide range of applications due to an increased fracture toughness and strength compared to monolithic materials. A better understanding of the correlation between properties and microstructure of these materials requires a detailed analysis of the phases which form during processing. This can be accomplished by using various transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. In this study Nb based AI2O3 composites were investigated. The composites were prepared by pressureless sintering 2 of compacts of attrition milled AI2O3 and prealloyed Nb(Al) powder mixtures. The addition of 7 wt.% of Al to the Nb powder is supposed to assist in rapid and complete sintering of the material. The microstructure was studied in detail by conventional TEM using selected area diffraction (SAD). The chemistry and structure of the occurring phases, second phase particles and grain boundaries were analysed by analytical TEM and high resolution TEM (HRTEM).

The mechanically induced self-propagating reaction (MSR) and hot-pressing consolidation were adapted to synthesize Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 using Ti, C and Al powder mixtures. The effects of Al content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of fully dense Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 were investigated. The results reveal that the Ti3AlC2, TiC and TiAlx transitional phases were formed by mechanically alloying according to the mechanically induced self-propagating reactions (MSR). Through hot pressing the as-milled powders with initial composition of 2Ti/1.5Al/C and 2Ti/Al/C, respectively, at 1100°C for 1 h, the desired high purity Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 were produced. SEM images confirmed that the as-fabricated Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 grains are plate-like with nanoscale layered structure and dispersed uniformly.

No abrupt reaction was observed during mechanical alloying (MA) of Ru and Al powder mixtures with an eutectic composition (Ru70Al30). As-milled powders constitute mainly a Ru(Al) solid solution and/or mixture (matrix), and a very small quantity of RuAl. The complete reaction between Ru and Al during MA was speculated to be hampered by excess Ru in Ru70Al30. No exothermic heat release was detected in differential scanning calorimetry for as-milled powders. Precipitation of RuAl from as-milled Ru(Al) matrix was observed after annealing at various temperatures. The phase fraction of Ru and RuAl reaches an approximately equilibrium value after annealing at 1173 K.
