Reflectometric measurements of thermally expanded core area In this work an analysis method of one-way optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) measurements has been presented. This method uniquely confirms mode field radii matching in diffusion transit area of the thermally expanded core (TEC) of thermally connected single mode telecommunication fibers. A comparison of reflectometric measurements with theoretical calculations of losses in TEC areas has been demonstrated.

Pada penelitian ini telah dilakukan analisis Rugi-rugi redaman yang dipengaruhi oleh lengkungan dengan beberapa variasi jari-jari lengkungan pada sistem komunikasi serat optic di jaringan FTTH. Ada tiga titik kabel serat optik yang akan diukur dengan jenis Single Mode Step Index pada panjang gelombang 1310 nm. Alat bantu yang digunakan adalah Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) tipe ANRITSU. Data dari pengukuran akan dibandingkan dengan data dari analisis perhitungan guna mencari nilai daya terima. Metode yang digunakan adalah power link budget dan power loss fiber. Dari hasil penelitian ini didapatkan bahwa saat jari-jari sebesar 0.3 cm dihasilkan nilai Rugi-rugi sebesar 13.6921 dB, sehingga nilai daya transmisi sebesar 60 dB berkurang menjadi 46.3079 dB. Besar nilai jari-jari lengkungan berbanding terbalik dengan nilai Rugi-rugi redaman. Namun berbanding lurus dengan nilai daya terima. Adanya variasi jari-jari lengkungan dengan sudut lengkungan rata-rata 75.730 yang masih layak terhadap sudut kritis 45.280dan panjang serat optik dapat mempengaruhi besar kecilnya nilai Rugi-rugi yang akan dihasilkan serta daya terima pada sistem dengan rata-rata presentase error persen tidak melebihi 1%.

AbstractIn this paper, the optimization tool based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to improve the different parameters such as the Attenuation and backscatter coefficients of single mode optical fibre (SMF) is proposed. The method of experimental study which is based on the use of an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to measure and locate different events that occur in an optical fibre in real time is exploited. The experimental results have been compared with theoretical results in order to validate the proposed methods of modelling.

AbstractNow a day all the telecommunication industries are using fibers for faster data communication and long distance communication. Fibers use light as the information and it is carried over long distances. Optical fiber has large advantages over a copper and co-axial cable because of its lower attenuation and interference. Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is also one of the important devices using in telecommunication industries to characterize an optical fiber. This article deals with the study of long distance backbone single mode fiber and their features are discussed with the use of an OTDR. The results of this article focused on the losses and breaks of the fiber with the events. The Single mode OTDR is used to find the events, losses and breaks of the backbone fiber between the two locations. This work will give a way to study the nature of optical fibers and understand the practical application of optical fiber communication.

Attenuation is an undesirable factor that weakens the strength of signal as it travels down fiber optics. Attenuation level in every fiber communication link must be kept at its tolerable range in order to maintain good signal transmission. When the level of attenuation in a link is higher than the acceptable tolerance value, the transmission suffers some setbacks such as loss of signal, freezing of signal etc. An optoelectronic device, Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) was used in the measurement of attenuations in the single-mode fiber using the uni-directional technique. It is a convenient and powerful tool for rapidly assessing attenuation behavior in optical fibers. It combines a detector and laser source to provide an inside view of the fiber link described by a trace. The injected light pulse from the laser source is received at the detector. OTDR traces were produced in accordance with the light pulses received. From these traces, the attenuation levels for the different fiber cores were obtained. An average attenuation limit of 0.188 dB/km and average section loss of 0.3dB for 1550 nm wavelength window over the span length of 1597.35 m were achieved which are within the acceptable standard range of 0.20 dB/km to 0.30 dB/km.
