The association of plasmonic nanostructures with nonlinear dielectric systems has been shown to provide useful platforms for boosting frequency conversion processes at metal-dielectric interfaces. Here, we report on an efficient route for engineering light–matter interaction processes in hybrid plasmonic-χ(2) dielectric systems to enhance second harmonic generation (SHG) processes confined in small spatial regions. By means of ferroelectric lithography, we have fabricated scalable micrometric arrangements of interacting silver nanoparticles compactly distributed on hexagonal regions. The fabricated polygonal microstructures support both localized and extended plasmonic modes, providing large spatial regions of field enhancement at the optical frequencies involved in the SHG process. We experimentally demonstrate that the resonant excitation of the plasmonic modes supported by the Ag nanoparticle-filled hexagons in the near infrared region produces an extraordinary 104-fold enhancement of the blue second harmonic intensity generated in the surface of a LiNbO3 crystal. The results open new perspectives for the design of efficient hybrid plasmonic frequency converters in miniaturized devices.

Frequency conversion plays an important role in both fundamental and applied nano-optics. Doubling the frequency of light by second harmonic generation (SHG) is a vital process e.g. in laser optics or high-resolution microscopy. SHG can be created through symmetry breaking at plasmonic nanostructures, or the local high electric near-fields of plasmonic nanoantennas can be utilized to further enhance the SHG e.g. from nonlinear crystals. Examples of SHG microscopy using cylindrical vector beams in combination with tilted nanocones and radially symmetric oligomers are shown as well as enhancement studies of the SHG from nonlinear crystals decorated with polarization-matched nanostructures.

We numerically and experimentally investigated the Cherenkov-type second harmonic generation of structured fundamental wave, whose phase was periodically modulated, in periodically poled nonlinear crystals. The Cherenkov-type second harmonic generation with different parameters of the structured fundamental wave was investigated. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. This study provides a method of dynamically tailoring the Cherenkov-type second harmonic wave and also has potential application in other nonlinear frequency conversion processes.

Abstract Plenary large-scale efficient second-harmonic generation sources remains a challenge in micro-/nanoscale research. In this work, we demonstrate the strong second-harmonic generation in arrays of selenium particles fabricated by green printing method at the pumping wavelength of 1047 nm. Second-harmonic generation mapping shows the strong signal over the whole area of selenium particle. We propose, that such structures can be a perspective platform for efficient frequency conversion systems and nonlinear sensing applications.
