A general equation studying the combined effect of horizontal and vertical magnetic fields on the stability of two superposed fluids has been obtained. The unstable and stable cases at the interface (z = 0) between two uniform fluids, with both the possibilities of real and complex n, have been. separately dealt with. Some new results are obtained. In the unstable case with real n, the perturbations are damped or unstable according as 2(k'-k~L2)_(<X2-<Xl)k is> or < 0 under the physical situation (35). In the stable case, the perturbations are stable or unstable according as 2(k2_k~L2)+(<Xl-<X2)k is > or < 0 under the same physical situation (35). The perturbations become unstable if HIlIH 1- (= L) is large. Both the cases are also discussed with imaginary n.

Abstract The stability of the plane interface separating two Rivlin-Ericksen elastico-viscous superposed fluids of uniform densities when the whole system is immersed in a uniform horizontal magnetic field has been studied. The stability analysis has been carried out, for mathematical simplicity, for two highly viscous fluids of equal kinematic viscosities and equal kinematic viscoelasticities. It is found that the stability criterion is independent of the effects of viscosity and viscoelasticity and is dependent on the orientation and magnitude of the magnetic field. The magnetic field is found to stabilize a certain wave-number range of the unstable configuration. The behaviour of growth rates with respect to kinematic viscosity and kinematic viscoelasticity parameters are examined numerically.

The effect of finite ion Larmor radius on the gravitational instability of two superposed fluids in uniform rotation is investigated for interchange perturbations, using the macroscopic equations of motion, where the finite ion Larmor radius effect is incorporated through off-diagonal terms in the pressure tensor. It is found that the region of stable wavelengths is enhanced due to the simultaneous presence of finite Larmor radius and a uniform rotation. A similar conclusion is also arrived at for the situation when a vortex sheet is present between the two superposed fluids.

AbstractThe dispersion equation describing the character of the equilibrium of two viscous incompressible superposed fluids under the action of gravity is considered in detail. Approximations for extreme wave-numbers are obtained and exact numerical results for particular cases are given. The existence of certain secondary modes is also considered.

The magnetogravitational instability of compressible streaming superposed fluids pervaded by different transverse magnetic fields is investigated. A perturbed sinusoidal wave is assumed to propagate along the direction of the streaming velocities. The stability criterion has been derived in a general form, and some limiting cases are recovered from it. The influences of different forces and factors are identified. The system under consideration is unstable not only for states with long wavelengths but also for those with short wavelengths.

The stability of the plane interface separating two viscoelastic (Walters B') superposed fluids in por-ous medium in the presence of suspended particles is considered. For the case of two uniform Walters B' fluids separated by a horizontal boundary, the system is found to be stable or unstable under certain conditions for the stable configuration. However, the system is found to be unstable for the unstable configuration. The case of an exponentially varying density is also considered. For the stable stratifica-tion, the system is found to be stable or unstable under certain conditions, whereas the system is found to be unstable for the unstable stratification. The behaviour of growth rates with respect to suspended particle, number density, and medium permeability is examined analytically.

This paper discusses the effect of a general oblique magnetic field on the stability of two superposed fluids in relative horizontal motion. The stable and unstable cases at the interface (z = 0) between two uniform fluids with constant denRities and velocities of streaming are separately discussed. The combined effect of horizontal and vertical magnetic fields is to increase the wavelength at which the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability sets in.
