An equation of state (EOS) model of detonation products based on chemical equilibrium is developed. The EOS of gaseous detonation products is described by Rosss modification of hard-sphere variation theory and the improved one-fluid van der Waals mixture model. The condensed phases of carbon are taken as a mixture of graphite, diamond, graphite-like liquid and diamond-like liquid. For a mixed system of detonation products, the free energy minimization principle is used to determine the equilibrium compositions of detonation products by solving chemical equilibrium equations. The potential function parameters have been renewed and the non-ideal fixing effects of the major detonation products have been taken into account. The calculated detonation parameters in our work for a variety of explosives are well in agreement with the experimental data.

Contemporary research in the field of explosive applications implies utilization of hydrocode simulations. Validity of these simulations strongly depends on parameters used in the equation of state for high explosives considered. A new analytical model for determination of Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) equation of state parameters based on the cylinder test is proposed. The model relies on analysis of the metal cylinder expansion by detonation products. Available cylinder test data for five high explosives are used for the calculation of JWL parameters. Good agreement between results of the model and the literature data is observed, justifying the suggested analytical approach. Numerical finite element model of the cylinder test is created in Abaqus in order to validate the proposed model. Using the analytical model results as the input, it was shown that numerical simulation of the cylinder test accurately reproduces experimental results for all considered high explosives. Therefore, both the analytical method for calculation of JWL equation of state parameters and numerical Abaqus model of the cylinder test are validated.

Abstract The extreme pressures and temperatures of the gas produced by detonating a High Explosive (HE) make it difficult to use experimental measurements to estimate the Equation Of State (EOS), the physics model that relates pressure, temperature, and density of the gas. Instead of measuring pressure directly one measures effects like the acceleration of metals driven by the HE. Typically one fits a few free parameters in a fixed functional form to measurements from a single experiment. The present work uses the optimization tool F_UNCLE to incorporate data from multiple experiments into a single EOS model for the gas produced by detonating the explosive PBX 9501. The model is verified by comparison to an experiment from outside the set of calibration data. The uncertainty in the EOS is also is examined to determine how each calibration experiment constrains the model and how the uncertainty arising from all calibration experiments affects predictions. This work identifies an EOS for HE detonation products and uncertainty about the EOS.
