The control of Mechanically Activated Field Activated Pressure Assisted Synthesis hereafter called the MAFAPAS process is the main objective to be achieved for producing nanostructure materials with a controlled consolidation level. Consequently, it was essential to develop characterization tools "in situ" such as the Time Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXRD), with an X-ray synchrotron beam (H10, LURE Orsay) coupled to an infrared thermography to study simultaneously structural transformations and thermal evolutions. From the 2003 experiments, we took the opportunity to modify the sample-holder in order to reproduce the better synthesis conditions of the MAFAPAS process, but without the consolidation step. The versatility of the setup has been proved and could even be enhanced by the design of new sample holders. In addition, this work clearly shows that this equipment will allow, on the one hand, to make progress of the understanding of MAFAPAS mechanisms and, on the other hand, to adjust reaction parameters (mechanical activation and combustion synthesis) for producing many materials with an expected microstructure.

The requirement for vibrational stability of beamline optics continues to evolve rapidly to comply with the demands created by the improved brilliance of the third-generation low-emittance storage rings around the world. The challenge is to quantify the performance of the instrument before it is installed at the beamline. In this article, measurement techniques are presented that directly and accurately measure (i) the relative vibration between the two crystals of a double-crystal monochromator (DCM) and (ii) the absolute vibration of the second-crystal cage of a DCM. Excluding a synchrotron beam, the measurements are conducted underin situconditions, connected to a liquid-nitrogen cryocooler. The investigated DCM utilizes a direct-drive (no gearing) goniometer for the Bragg rotation. The main causes of the DCM vibration are found to be the servoing of the direct-drive goniometer and the flexibility in the crystal cage motion stages. It is found that the investigated DCM can offer relative pitch vibration down to 48 nrad RMS (capacitive sensors, 0–5 kHz bandwidth) and absolute pitch vibration down to 82 nrad RMS (laser interferometer, 0–50 kHz bandwidth), with the Bragg axis brake engaged.

For the investigation of small sample volumes, the use of an acoustic levitator was tested as a `sample holder' for hovering droplets in a synchrotron beam. It might be advantageous to use levitated droplets instead of samples confined in solid holders, especially for the study of crystallization processes where the influence of containing walls has to be minimized. In a first experiment, the crystallization of sodium chloride in a small droplet of aqueous solution has been followed with a time resolution of 30 s. The collected diffraction peaks are compared with data in the ICSD database.

The order of OH groups in the crystal structure of SbC2O4OH, a potential precursor in the synthesis of ternary oxides, was debated. Neutron diffraction on the deuteride SbC2O4OD revealed disordered OD groups with half occupation for deuterium atoms on either side of a mirror plane (SbC2O4OD at T = 298(1) K: Pnma, a = 582.07(3) pm, b = 1128.73(5) pm, c = 631.26(4) pm). O–H stretching frequencies are shifted by a factor of 1.35 from 3390 cm−1 in the hydride to 2513 cm−1 in the deuteride as seen in infrared spectra. SbC2O4OH suffers radiation damage in a synchrotron beam, which leaves a dark amorphous residue. Thermal decomposition at 564 K yields antimony oxide, carbon dioxide, carbon oxide, and water in an endothermic reaction. When using SbC2O4OH as a precursor in reactions, however, ternary oxides are only formed at much higher temperatures.

Setting up of the X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) measurement facility with hard X-rays at the Energy-Dispersive EXAFS beamline (BL-08) at the Indus-2 synchrotron source is reported. This includes the design and development of a water-cooled electromagnet having a highest magnetic field of 2 T in a good field volume of 125 mm3 and having a 10 mm hole throughout for passage of the synchrotron beam. This also includes the development of an (X–Z–θ) motion stage for the heavy electromagnet for aligning its axis and the beam hole along the synchrotron beam direction. Along with the above developments, also reported is the first XMCD signal measured on a thick Gd film in the above set-up which shows good agreement with the reported results. This is the first facility to carry out XMCD measurement with hard X-rays in India.
