AbstractWe investigate the motion of high-Reynolds-number gravity currents (GCs) in a horizontal channel of V-shaped cross-section combining lock-exchange experiments and a theoretical model. While all previously published experiments in V-shaped channels were performed with the special configuration of the full-depth lock, we present the first part-depth experiment results. A fixed volume of saline, that was initially of length $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}x_0$ and height $h_0$ in a lock and embedded in water of height $H_0$ in a long tank, was released from rest and the propagation was recorded over a distance of typically $ 30 x_0$. In all of the tested cases the current displays a slumping stage of constant speed $u_N$ over a significant distance $x_S$, followed by a self-similar stage up to the distance $x_V$, where transition to the viscous regime occurs. The new data and insights of this study elucidate the influence of the height ratio $H = H_0/h_0$ and of the initial Reynolds number ${\mathit{Re}}_0 = (g^{\prime }h_0)^{{{1/2}}} h_0/ \nu $, on the motion of the triangular GC; $g^{\prime }$ and $\nu $ are the reduced gravity and kinematic viscosity coefficient, respectively. We demonstrate that the speed of propagation $u_N$ scaled with $(g^{\prime } h_0)^{{{1/2}}}$ increases with $H$, while $x_S$ decreases with $H$, and $x_V \sim [{\mathit{Re}}_0(h_0/x_0)]^{{4/9}}$. The initial propagation in the triangle is 50 % more rapid than in a standard flat-bottom channel under similar conditions. Comparisons with theoretical predictions show good qualitative agreements and fair quantitative agreement; the major discrepancy is an overpredicted $u_N$, similar to that observed in the standard flat bottom case.

Experiments to investigate the formation mechanism and frequency of vortex shedding from a sphere in uniform shear flow were conducted in a water channel using flow visualization and velocity measurement. The Reynolds number, defined in terms of the sphere diameter and approach velocity at its centre, ranged from 200 to 3000. The shear parameter K, defined as the transverse velocity gradient of the shear flow non-dimensionalized by the above two parameters, was varied from 0 to 0.25. The critical Reynolds number beyond which vortex shedding from the sphere occurred was found to be lower than that for uniform flow and decreased approximately linearly with increasing shear parameter. Also, the Strouhal number of the hairpin-shaped vortex loops became larger than that for uniform flow and increased as the shear parameter increased.The formation mechanism and the structure of vortex shedding were examined on the basis of series of photographs and subsequent image processing using computer graphics. The range of Reynolds number in the present investigation, extending up to 3000, could be classified into three regions on the basis of this study, and it was observed that the wake configuration did not differ substantially from that for uniform flow. Also, unlike the detachment point of vortex loops in uniform flow, which was irregularly located along the circumference of the sphere, the detachment point in shear flow was always on the high-velocity side.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to numerically investigate heat transfer and entropy generation between airframe and cabin-cargo departments in an aircraft. The conjugate forced convection and entropy generation in a cylindrical cavity within air channel partly filled with porous insulation material as simplified geometry for airframe and cabin-cargo departments are considered under local thermal non-equilibrium condition. Design/methodology/approach The non-dimensional governing equations for fluid and porous media discretized by finite volume method are solved using the SIMPLE algorithm with pressure and velocity correction. Findings The effects of the following parameters on the problem are investigated; Reynolds number, Darcy number, the size of inlet and exit cross-section, thermal conductivity ratio for solid and fluid phases, angle between the vertical symmetry axis and the end of channel wall exit and the gap between adiabatic channel wall and horizontal adiabatic wall separating cabin and cargo sections. Originality/value This paper can provide a basic perspective and framework for thermal design between the fuselage and cabin-cargo sections. The minimum total entropy generation number is calculated for various Reynolds numbers and thermal conductivity ratios. It is observed that the channel wall temperature increases for high Reynolds number, low Darcy number, narrower exit cross-section and wider the gap between channel wall and horizontal.

An experimental investigation of water flow in a T-shaped channel with rectangular cross section (20 × 20 mm inlet ID and 20 × 40 mm outlet ID) has been conducted for a Reynolds number Re range of 56 to 422, based on inlet diameter. Dynamical conditions and the T-channel geometry of the current study are applicable to the microscale. This study supports a large body of numerical work, and resolution and the interrogation region are extended beyond previous experimental studies. Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) are used to characterize flow behaviors over the broad range of Re where realistic T-channels operate. Scalar structures previously unresolved in the literature are presented. Special attention is paid to the unsteady flow regimes that develop at moderate Re, which significantly impact mixing but are not yet well characterized or understood. An unsteady symmetric topology, which develops at higher Re and negatively impacts mixing, is presented, and mechanisms behind the wide range of mixing qualities predicted for this regime are explained. An optimal Re operating range is identified based on multiple experimental trials.

Placement of the weir in the river Batang Gadis will cause population anxiety in the village Pulungan which located upstream weir as far as 3 km, due to a weir can cause water surface profile of the river getting higher and ultimately to increase the pool of flooding in residential areas.Assuming modeling of river a uniform flow, river cross-section has a rectangular shape with width 50 m and 40 m, the roughness Manning 0.0025, the profile of water flow floods that occurred in 2 yaears, 25 years, and 100 years before and after the existing weir can be calculated by numerical integration methods.  From the calculation, the length of the water behind the weir is 1.4 km upstream towards the weir, which means that the depth of the water level rises to as far as 1.4 km and after that the depth of water before and after there the weir is same. Because the village Pulungan located 3 km to the upstream, the weir did not affect the increase in the flood waters in the village Pulungan. At 2 years flood discharge does not cause inundation in the village Pulungan, but the flood discharge 25 years and 100 years has led to inundation in the village Pulungan with the depth of each pool 0.971 m and 1.675 m. This paper present new result for experimental analysis of air flow velocity and pressure distributions between two ducts bend: (1) 90° duct bend with a single turning vane having 0.03m radius and (2) 90° duct bend with double turning vane, in 0.06 × 0.06 m duct cross section. The experiment used five different Reynolds numbers chosen between the ranges 1 ×104 and 6×104. Each experiment has four point measurements: (1) point 1 and point 2 at cross section A-A and (2) point 3 and point 4 at cross section B-B. The first experimental study used single turning vane radius 0.03m with inlet air velocity from 2.5m/s to 12.2m/s. And for the second experiment that used square turning vane with 0.03m radius. In experiment 2, the inlet air velocity also start from 2.5m/s to 12.2m/s. From analysis results, the pressure drop in experiment 1 is higher than experiment 2. As example the maximum pressure drop at 7.5m/s inlet air velocity between point 1 and 3 was found to be 71.6203 Pa in experiment 1 as compared to 61.8093 Pa in experiment 2. The velocity after duct bend is greater when using double turning vane compare used single turning vane as maximum velocity at point 3 in experiment 2 compare to velocity at point 3 in experiment 1 that is 55.677× 10-4 m/s and 54.221× 10-4 m/s. The velocity at duct wall is equal to zero. When increase the value of Reynolds number or inlet velocity, the maximum velocity and total pressure also increase. For example in experiment 1 at point 1, the velocity is 48.785 × 10-4 m/s at Reynolds number 1 ×104 and velocity 65.115×10-4 m/s at Reynolds number 12.2 ×104 . Velocity flow in duct section are lower than inlet velocity. In experiment 1, the inlet velocity is 2.5m/s meanwhile the maximum velocity in the duct section at point 2 is 73.075×10-4 m/s that is much more lower than inlet velocity.
