Continuity equations for electron charge densities and current densities induced in molecules by electric and magnetic fields

The microscopic field equations of electromagnetism interacting with a many-particle Schrodinger field of charged particles are shown to be exactly equivalent to the atomic field equations where the sources are free electron and ion charge densities and convective and Rontgen current densities only. The fields are now the microscopic displacement vector d and the microscopic auxiliary field h and their relation to the electric and magnetic fields e and b are given exactly in terms of polarization and magnetization vectors without reference to any multipolar expansions. The values of the polarization fields are calculated for several transitions in atomic hydrogen to illustrate the connexion with the usual multipole expansions.

The Way

The electric and magnetic fields at an arbitrary point inside matter fluctuate rapidly both in space and time. It is therefore necessary, in the chapter’s introduction, tomake the important distinction between microscopic and macroscopic fields. It is assumed throughout that the electric dipole approximation is valid, and several important properties which apply to matter in bulk are described early on. Along the way, it is convenient to define two new fields D and H, and these appear in a number of questions. Another feature which emerges during this treatment includes the concept of bound charge and current densities, and how these quantities are incorporated intoMaxwell’s inhomogeneous equations. Although Chapter 9 deals exclusively with static fields, it forms an important backdrop to Chapter 10 where some general timedependent aspects of macroscopic electromagnetism are considered.

A kinetic theory of nonlinear currents, quasi-stationary electric and magnetic fields and the ponderomotive effect of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation on a collisionless plasma is developed. General expressions for nonlinear current densities, fields and ponderomotive forces that are applicable in a broad range of space-time scales, characteristie of low-frequency motion in plasma, are obtained. These expressions are compared with the results of previous papers.
