We present a comparative study of optical bistability (OB) in three-level atomic configurations, including $\Lambda $-, cascade-, and V- types under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In the steady regime, the input-output intensity relations for the OB in each configuration have been derived in analytical form. The model allows one to construct a clear picture on how the threshold intensity, and other characteristics of the OB are continuously modified with respects to controllable parameters of the laser fields, cooperation parameter, and other physical parameters of atomic system. The results showed that the threshold intensity of OB in \(\Lambda \)-type system is much less than the other ones and the threshold intensity of OB in V-type system is the largest one. The analytical result is convenient to choose excitation configuration for experimental observations and related applications in photonic devices.

We have theoretically studied the atomic populations, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), and dispersion in a three-level Λ-type system. The density matrix equations are set up with regard for the relaxation of populations of the ground states, and the optical Bloch equations are solved analytically in the weak probe field approximation. Decoherence effects in the ground and excited states on the EIT line shape and dispersive signals are studied, and it is found that the EIT line width increases and the peak height decreases, as the decoherence rates increase in the ground and excited states. On the other hand, we have observed that the dispersive signals are steeper and of high contrast for the lower decoherence rates in the ground and excited states. We have also analyzed the variations of atomic populations of the energy levels at the pump Rabi frequency, as well as the decoherence rate in the ground state.

Abstract In this paper, a structure comprising a horizontal metal strip resonator(SR) and four C-shape ring resonators(CRRs) is proposed, obtaining a broadband electromagnetically induced transparency-like(EIT-like) effect. The SR and CRRs are classified into bright mode and dark mode depending on whether they can be directly excited by the incident electromagnetic wave. The three-level Λ -type system and electric field are used to explain the mechanism of EIT-like effect. Meanwhile, by decreasing the distance between SR and CRRs, a transparency window of 1.4THz with relative bandwidth of 91.93% is observed. It is found that when the bright and dark mode are directly contacted, the EIT window increases rapidly via conductive coupling, which can be explained by the surface current. Our work provides a new method for wide band EIT-like effect, which has certain value in the field of slow light, filter and non-linear optics.
