The article presents the results of a study of the effect of milled and chopped carbon fibers, with an average particle length of 0.2 and , respectively, on the mechanical properties of polyphenylene sulfide and its heat resistance. It was found that the introduction of carbon fibers leads to a significant decrease in the melt flow rate. It was shown that after a sharp decrease in impact strength at 10 % content of carbon fibers, its inverse improvement occurs with an increase in the filler content. Composites containing carbon fibers with length demonstrate higher impact strength. The introduction of a filler leads to a significant increase in the elastic modulus and strength of polyphenylene sulfide and its heat resistance.

The paper studies new high-temperature thermoplastic impregnated unidirectional carbon fiber composites. The research focuses on the effect of thermal and chemical oxidation of the carbon fibers surface on the interfacial interaction between fibers and polysulfone and polyphenylene sulfide as well as thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The research reveals the interaction between carbon fibers and the polymer matrix depend both on the type of surface treatment and nature of the polymer. The chemical oxidation of carbon fibers results in good interfacial interaction, and the best mechanical properties were observed for tows impregnated with polyphenylene sulfide.

This paper is focused on the processing of thermoplastic composite materials obtained from carbon fibers (CFs) treated by plasma assisted techniques. The treatments employed in this work were the Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD), which is done at atmospheric pressure, involving lower energies and the Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII), which is performed at low pressure, involving higher energies. After the treatments, samples characterizations were performed to determine which treatment is most effective to get better physico-chemical CF surface properties. The techniques employed in this work in order to evaluate the surface treatment were: scanning electron microscopy (SEM); atomic force microscopy (AFM) Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Treated and untreated CFs/Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composites were processed by hot-compression molding technique. These composites were evaluated by interlaminar shear tests (ILSS). After analyzing the results, it was found that the treatments increased the CF roughness and caused slight changes in the CF structure. In addition, there was an increase in the shear strength of the composites obtained from treated fibers by both plasma processes. In conclusion, DBD and PIII treatments are effective tools for improving adhesion between CF and the polymeric matrix.

Terahertz (THz) applications have emerged as one of the most new powerful nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. A new T-ray time-domain spectroscopy system was utilized for detecting and evaluating orientation influence in carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) composite laminates. Investigation of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was made, and reflection and transmission configurations were studied as a nondestructive evaluation technique. Here, the CFRP composites derived their excellent mechanical strength, stiffness, and electrical conductivity from carbon fibers. Especially, the electrical conductivity of the CFRP composites depends on the direction of unidirectional fibers since carbon fibers are electrically conducting while the epoxy matrix is not. In order to solve various material properties, the index of refraction (n) and the absorption coefficient (α) are derived in reflective and transmission configurations using the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Also, for a 48-ply thermoplastic polyphenylene-sulfide-(PPS-) based CFRP solid laminate and nonconducting materials, the terahertz scanning images were made at the angles ranged from0°to180°with respect to the nominal fiber axis. So, the images were mapped out based on the electrical field (E-field) direction in the CFRP solid laminates. It is found that the conductivity (σ) depends on the angles of the nominal axis in the unidirectional fiber.

The present paper considers the influence of various technological approaches, based on the application of joint mechanochemical processing of composite components and ultrasonic action, on the performance of composites based on PTFE and discrete carbon fibers of UVIS-AK-P brand. It is established that the use of a certain method of energy deposition on the composite components for the complex enhancement of physical-mechanical and tribological properties depends on the concentration of carbon fibers (CF) in polymer matrix. As a result of the joint mechanoactivation treatment of the components in the planetary mill for 2 minutes, an improvement in physical-mechanical and tribotechnical properties of PTFE with CF concentration of 5 wt.% is observed. An improvement at concentration of 3 wt.% of CF is detected during ultrasonic treatment of PCM components.
