A formula is presented to calculate the rate of bulk fluid flow in accord with hydrodynamic flow parameters and physical-chemical characteristics of pumping fluids. The formula was derived based on a model knowledge of fluid flow as a continuous sequence of strains — rotations of fluid fragments by the action of shear stress. Laboratory testing of volumetric flow rate depending on the hydrodynamic flow parameters and physical-chemical properties of liquids performed on a turbulent rheometer and as working fluids used ethanol and gasoline. The power and logarithmic dependences of the volume velocity were also checked using real data from the operation of oilfield pipelines. The results obtained satisfactory agree with the calculated data.

The numerical modeling of semi-solid processing requires data on the rheological properties of materials. This data is often obtained by rheometry but there are difficulties with characterizing high solid fractions, where the torque which can be exerted with the rheometer is insufficient. A number of other methods for measuring the flow parameters, including compression between platens, have been utilized. The various methods will be reviewed in this paper. Computational fluid dynamics modelers have often used data from steady state experiments but it is the behaviour during rapid transients which is more relevant to the actual semi-solid processing route.

Moisture and suction variation beneath pavement contribute significantly to the volumetric deformation of expansive subgrade in response to climatic loading. In order to quantify the damage due to climatic loading, estimation of moisture, and suction variation in pavement subgrade is of paramount importance. The objective of the current study is to investigate the moisture and suction variation in response to precipitation events with the aid of numerical modeling in the unsaturated pavement subgrade. In unsaturated soils where the voids are filled with both water and air, the SWCC describes the volume of the voids that remain filled with water as the soil drains pore water. The SWCC has been identified as the vital soil information required to analyze seepage, stability, and volume change problems involved in unsaturated soils. However, the selection of unsaturated flow parameters is typically laboratory-based which represents specific conditions rather than a dynamic scenario of the field. In this study, an attempt was undertaken to conduct numerical modeling using field generated unsaturated flow parameters along with five other predictive models. Results indicated the distinct variation of moisture and suction distribution in subgrade from the same rainfall event while using laboratory versus field generated SWCC unsaturated flow parameters. In addition, predicted model yielded output was also varying with the field generated parameters’ output. Instead of using laboratory-generated static parameters, it was found that field generated dynamic unsaturated flow parameters were able to capture better suction variation at the pavement subgrade.

The flow of a viscous, incompressible fluid between two eccentric rotating porous cylinders with suction/injection at both the cylinders, for very small clearance ratio is studied. The expressions for various flow characteristics are obtained using perturbation analysis. Streamlines and pressure plots are shown graphically for various values of flow parameters and discussed.
