The flow over a backward-facing step with laminar separation was investigated experimentally under controlled perturbation for a Reynolds number of 11000, based on a step height h and a free-stream velocity UO. The reattaching shear layer was found to have two distinct modes of instability: the ‘shear layer mode’ of instability at Stθ ≈ 0.012 (Stθ ≡ fθ/UO, θ being the momentum thickness at separation and f the natural roll-up frequency of the shear layer); and the ‘step mode’ of instability at Sth ≈ 0.185 (Sth ≡ fh/U0). The shear layer instability frequency reduced to the step mode one via one or more stages of a vortex merging process. The perturbation increased the shear layer growth rate and the turbulence intensity and decreased the reattachment length compared to the unperturbed flow. Cross-stream measurements of the amplitudes of the perturbed frequency and its harmonics suggested the splitting of the shear layer. Flow visualization confirmed the shear layer splitting and showed the existence of a low-frequency flapping of the shear layer.

This article presents a cost sensitive probabilistic contingent planning approach for automated semantic web service composition, under the assumptions that the execution of each web service incurs some cost; its alternative outcomes along with their probabilities of occurring are known in advance; and actions do not involve delete effects. The implemented planner, MAPPPA2, produces a contingent plan in the form of a decision tree, by integrating multiple alternative deterministic plans computed by solving a determinized version of the original problem. Both the generation of the alternative deterministic plans, as well as the merging process attempt to maximize the expected utility of the final contingent plan. The article presents evaluation results regarding the approach, based on three web service composition domains.

3D Visualization provides a mean for communicating different construction activities to diverse audiences. The scope, level of detail, and time resolution of the 3D visualization process are determined based on the targeted audiences. Developing the 3D visualization requires obtaining and merging heterogeneous data from different sources (such as BIM model and CPM schedule). The data merging process is usually carried out on ad hoc basis for a specific visualization case which limits the reusability of the process. This paper discusses a framework for automatic merging of heterogeneous data to create a visualization. The paper describes developing an ontology which captures concepts related to the visualization process. Then, heterogeneous data sources that are commonly used in construction are fed into the ontology which can be queried to produce different visualization scenarios. The potential of this approach has been demonstrated by providing multiple visualization scenarios that cover different audiences, levels of detail, and time resolutions.

As companies have engaged in domestic and international mergers over the last few years in order to match the macroeconomic trends operating on a worldwide and more recently to cope with the current global financial crisis, human resource managers have been encouraged to play a more strategic role in their organizations, especially in the case of extensive and radical organizational change such as merging process. This study addresses and works on the existing research gap by investigating the roles of HR managers among the different roles which were defined at the fist by Dave Ulrich. This paper demonstrates that HR managers are an essential part of merger and that HR practices should be given an extensive emphasizing throughout such organizational change “the merger process”.
