ABSTRACTOrganic thin film photovoltaic (PV) cells have attracted attention because of their ease of fabrication and potential for low cost production. In this paper, we study the effects of chemical modification of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) on the performance of organic PV cells. The organic PV cells are fabricated, with the cell configuration of ITO/copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) (20 nm)/fullerene (C60) (40 nm)/Al with and without bathocuproine (BCP) (10 nm) between C60 and Al. By the use of para-substituted benzenesulfonyl chlorides with different terminal groups of H- and Cl-, the energy offset at the ITO/CuPc interface is tuned widely depending upon the interface dipoles and thus the correlation between the change in the ITO work function and the performance of the PV cells by chemical modification is examined.

AbstractTransparent conducting oxides (TCOs) are an increasingly important component of photovoltaic (PV) devices, where they act as electrode elements, structural templates, and diffusion barriers, and their work function controls the open-circuit device voltage. They are employed in applications that range from crystalline-Si heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (HIT) cells to organic PV polymer solar cells. The desirable characteristics of TCO materials that are common to all PV technologies are similar to the requirements for TCOs for flat-panel display applications and include high optical transmissivity across a wide spectrum and low resistivity. Additionally, TCOs for terrestrial PV applications must use low-cost materials, and some may require device-technology-specific properties. We review the fundamentals of TCOs and the matrix of TCO properties and processing as they apply to current and future PV technologies.

Various treatments on the PEDOT:PSS films were carried out to investigate it’s influence on the conductivity, morphology, transmittance and the corresponding impact of the performance of the organic photovoltaic devices based on the PCPDTBT:PCBM and P3HT:PCBM blends. These processing including doping PEDOT:PSS with DMF and ME solvents and exposing these films to the vapor of DMF and ME solvents, separately. A considerable enhancement of the conductivity and transmittance of PEDOT:PSS was observed after doping solvent into the PEDOT;PSS solution followed by solvent treatment through exposing these films to solvents environment. The best organic PV doped devices based on either PCPDTBT:PCBM or based on P3HT:PCBM with power conversion efficiency were 2.93% compared to 1.87% for the pristine  PV devices or 2.79% compared to 1.77%  for the pristine devices, respectively. The conductivity improvement was highly influenced by solvent treatment.
