We report on measurements on very long, L ≃ 30λj, NbAlOxNb underdamped in-line junctions, on which we observed displaced linear slope (DLS) generated by the application of an external magnetic field. We study the behaviour of the branches as a function of the applied magnetic field in terms of both current amplitude and voltage position. The DLS is seen to shift rigidly towards higher voltages when increasing the field, spanning a region roughly centred around the Josephson plasma frequency. We discuss the behaviour of linear branches in terms of one dimensional flux-flow along the extended side of the junction, comparing our data with the results of numerical modeling; from these calculations the non-resonant nature of DLS is very evident, in contrast to the resonant regime giving rise to Fiske steps (FS).

A strong temperature dependent phenomenon of the Josephson plasma resonance mode has been found in high-Tc superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ in a microwave frequency region between 9 and 50 GHz. The longitudinal plasma frequency sharply decreases and disappears just below Tc. The extrapolated plasma energy is estimated to be ℏω p (0)=2.59× 10-4 eV . Since the plasma frequency, ω p , is determined by the Anderson-Higgs–Kibble mechanism and it is expected to be temperature independent, this phenomenon can not be accounted for by the conventional underst and ing of the plasma mode in superconductors. Experimental results are discussed in terms of the two fluid model, in which the intrinsic Josephson nature of the coupling restricting the tunneling probability of quasiparticles between layers is considered to be as a dumping mechanism of the quasiparticles in this system.

Abstract. VLF-ELF broadband measurements onboard the MAGION 4 and 5 satellites at heights above 1 Re in plasmasphere provide new data on various known phenomena related to ducted and nonducted whistler wave propagation. Two examples are discussed: magnetospherically reflected (MR) whistlers and lower hybrid resonance (LHR) noise band. We present examples of rather complicated MR whistler spectrograms not reported previously and argue the conditions for their generation. Analytical consideration, together with numerical modelling, yield understanding of the main features of those spectrograms. LHR noise band, as well as MR whistlers, is a phenomenon whose source is the energy propagating in the nonducted way. At the plasmaspheric heights, where hydrogen (H+) is the prevailing ion, and electron plasma frequency is much larger than gyrofrequency, the LHR frequency is close to its maximumvalue in a given magnetic field. This frequency is well followed by the observed noise bands. The lower cutoff frequency of this band is somewhat below that maximum value. The reason for this, as well as the possibility of using the LHR noise bands for locating the plasma through position, are discussed.Key words.
