This paper contains an extension of the uniaxial state variable constitutive model of Ramaswamy et al. (1988) to the case of multiaxial loading. The correlation between uniaxial and multiaxial loading conditions is achieved through the assumptions of material isotropy and conservation of inelastic volume. The multiaxial extension is based only on the material parameters evaluated from uniaxial loading. The research is accompanied by a multiaxial experimental program to evaluate the response of Rene’ 80 at 871°C and 982° C. Experiments in the program include torsion, proportional axial and torsion, and nonproportional loading. It was shown experimentally that there is no extra hardening from the multiaxial loading than results from uniaxial loading. Further, it is shown that the multiaxial model is successful in predicting the experimental results using only the parameters determined from the uniaxial experiments.

In this paper we present a new constitutive model for concrete. The framework is originally proposed for shape memory alloy, a kind of crystalline material. We show how to apply this framework for non-crystalline material: concrete. The resulting yield surface and stress-strain relationship are compared with that of experiment reported in the literature.

AbstractSome of the current concrete damage plasticity models in the literature employ a single damage variable for both the tension and compression regimes, while a few more advanced models employ two damage variables. Models with a single variable have an inherent difficulty in accounting for the damage accrued due to tensile and compressive actions in appropriately different manners, and their mutual dependencies. In the current models that adopt two damage variables, the independence of these damage variables during cyclic loading results in the failure to capture the effects of tensile damage on the compressive behavior of concrete and vice-versa. This study presents a cyclic model established by extending an existing monotonic constitutive model. The model describes the cyclic behavior of concrete under multiaxial loading conditions and considers the influence of tensile/compressive damage on the compressive/tensile response. The proposed model, dubbed the enhanced concrete damage plasticity model (ECDPM), is an extension of an existing model that combines the theories of classical plasticity and continuum damage mechanics. Unlike most prior studies on models in the same category, the performance of the proposed ECDPM is evaluated using experimental data on concrete specimens at the material level obtained under cyclic multiaxial loading conditions including uniaxial tension and confined compression. The performance of the model is observed to be satisfactory. Furthermore, the superiority of ECDPM over three previously proposed constitutive models is demonstrated through comparisons with the results of a uniaxial tension-compression test and a virtual test.

In order to investigate the multi-axial mechanical properties of a kind of PU (polyurethane) foam, some experiments in different loading conditions including uni-axial tension, uni-axial compression, hydrostatic compression and three-point bending were conducted. It is shown that the hydrostatic component influences yield behavior of PU foam, the yield strength and degree of strain hardening in hydrostatic compression exceed those for uni-axial compression. In terms of the differential hardening constitutive model, the evolution of PU foam yield surface and plastic hardening laws were fitted from experimental data. A finite element method was applied to analyze the quasi-static responses of the PU foam sandwich beam subjected to three-point bending, and good agreement was observed between experimental load-displacement responses and computational predictions, which validated the multi-axial loading methods and stress-strain constitutive model parameters. Moreover, effects of two foam models applied to uni-axial loading and multi-axial loading conditions were analyzed and compared with three-point bending tests and simulations. It is found that the multi-axial constitutive model can bring more accurate prediction whose parameters are obtained from the tests above mentioned.

A computational simulation of fracture behaviour in auxetic cellular structure, subjected to multiaxial loading is presented in this paper. A fracture behaviour of the 3D (three-dimensional) chiral auxetic structure under multiaxial loading conditions was studied. The computational models were used to study the geometry effect of the unit cell on the Poisson’s ratio and fracture behaviour of the analysed chiral auxetic structure. A 3D computational model was built using FEM-code LS DYNA. The discrete computational model of chiral auxetic structure was built using beam finite elements. The lattice model of the analysed auxetic structure was positioned between rigid plates and assembled in a way to simulate a hydro-compression loading conditions. Between the contacting surfaces interactions in normal (contact) and tangential direction (friction) with the node-to-surface approach were simulated. A developed computational model offers insight in the fracture behaviour of considered auxetic cellular structure and helps to better understanding their crushing behaviour under impact multiaxial loading.
