The brightness temperature was measured in polymethyl methacrylate shocked to 35 GPa by means of the fast two wavelengths optical pyrometer. The calibration of the pyrometer was performed by using a standard tungsten ribbon incandescent lamp prior to each shot. The measured brightness temperature at the wavelength λ = 550 nm was Tb = (1540 ± 30) K and at the wavelength λ = 630 nm it was Tb = (1510 ± 110) K. The results were compared with the temperature calculations obtained from different polymethyl methacrylate equations of state. The absorption coefficient of the shocked polymethyl methacrylate (α = 2.5 mm–1) was determined by using the time dependences in the pyrometric signals

Although the streaked optical pyrometer (SOP) system has been widely adopted in shock temperature measurements, its reliability has always been of concern. Here, two calibrated Planckian radiators with different color temperatures were used to calibrate and verify the SOP system by comparing the two calibration standards using both multi-channel and single-channel methods. A high-color-temperature standard lamp and a multi-channel filter were specifically designed for the measurement system. To verify the reliability of the SOP system, the relative deviation between the measured data and the standard value of less than 5% was calibrated out, which demonstrates the reliability of the SOP system. Furthermore, a method to analyze the uncertainty and sensitivity of the SOP system is proposed. A series of laser-induced shock experiments were conducted at the ‘Shenguang-II’ laser facility to verify the reliability of the SOP system for temperature measurements at tens of thousands of kelvin. The measured temperature of the quartz in our experiments agreed fairly well with previous works, which serves as evidence for the reliability of the SOP system.

Temperature measurements in the test section of a hypersonic gun tunnel using a modified line-reversal two-beam optical pyrometer have been performed. Measurements were made in the shock layer at the front of an ‘end-on’ flat-faced cylinder using argon or air as the driven gas. The measured temperatures were greater than the calculated isentropic temperatures but much less than the originally predicted shock-heated values. The experimental values agreed reasonably well with the theoretical temperatures for shock-heated air corrected for boundary-layer and heat-loss effects in the gun barrel and also with previously reported experimental values found using heat-transfer methods. Preliminary studies of the vibrational relaxation of nitrogen and air in the test section have been carried out using a flat-sided ‘relaxation’ tube (a Pitot tube with glass windows). They demonstrated the feasibility of this approach.
