In the frame of a circular economy, the maximization of secondary raw-material recovery is necessary to increase the economic and environmental sustainability of landfill mining and reclamation activities. In this paper, the polyethylene-rich plastic fraction recovered from the reclamation of an abandoned industrial landfill (landfill-recovered plastic, LRP) has been characterized through spectroscopic, thermal, morphological, and mechanical analyses. Then, an economically viable valorization and recycling strategy was set up. The effectiveness of this strategy in the enhancement of LRP properties has been demonstrated through morphological and mechanical characterizations.

Abstract Aiming for sustainable eco-friendly craft/design practice, this design research explored upcycling-practice of OPP plastic waste using traditional technology to create an alternative raw material for textile craft. By combining cultural investigation into the textile-making tradition with Cradle-to-Cradle design principles, we identified the potential of traditional technology as an ecologically responsible production process. We also developed upcycling method to process OPP plastic waste material. This research resulted in: (1) thread-making techniques that produce different sizes of thread as raw materials and hand-woven textile, (2) revitalized endangered indigenous technology of craft-making that had been a part of human-nature ecology, (3) eco-design education that can be accepted by local textile craft community, and (4) textile craft products that express the local identity and promote environmental care.

The increased use of disposable plastic consumer packaging, especially in the sanitary and epidemiological conditions of COVID-19, makes it necessary to dispose of the resulting waste. The problem is aggravated by the weak processing of waste, which is stored and not destroyed in nature. In this regard, the purpose of the article is to analyze the problems caused by the consumption and disposal of plastic disposable plastic packaging by retail chains and public catering companies. A brief comparative analysis of the composition and quantities of the plastic waste was carried out. The legal documents governing the waste management in Russia and abroad were studied. The Russian waste recycling market was compared with the foreign ones. Data on polymeric waste(composition, quantity, share in the total mass of waste, cost, and possibility of using as a secondary raw material) were studied. The lack of an effective system for collecting polymer waste and its utilization in Russia was emphasized and compared with Asian, European and American countries. In these countries, there are regulatory documents governing the collection and recycling of plastic products; the production itself is economically attractive. Recommendations aimed to encourage manufacturers to recycle waste were given; options for solving the problem of recycling plastic waste on a legislative, economic and managerial basis were offered.

This article provides an overview of the methods of processing slag from welting is given, different approaches and attempts of scientists from a number of countries aimed at processing such slags are considered. In the course of the review it was found that a huge number of the following methods and methods of processing from waelz slag, there is not a single option that has sufficient complexity of processing, and that at the moment are in the dumps toxins from waelz never found its use as a secondary raw material. The elemental chemical composition of the slag from welting, which is represented by compounds of calcium, silicon, iron, aluminum, carbon and heavy nonferrous metals in the form of zinc and lead, is determined. Thus, it is established that for many years, the slags from waelz that have not found their application and are in the dump at the moment continue to have a polluting effect on the environment. Hard inorganic particles in the interaction with polymeric materials increase wear resistance. Also reactoplastics are suitable for filling with micro- and nano-particles for a purpose of some mechanical properties optimization. The paper compares chosen mechanical properties – hardness, wear resistance and tensile characteristics of epoxy resin filled with artificial corundum with various middle particles sizes and their ratio combination. Mentioned systems can be used in a sphere of the agricultural production at renovation of machine parts, they can serve for creating resistant layers on machines, floors and grillages at the same time. The aim of the carried out experiment is to compare the properties of reactoplastics filled with a primary and secondary raw material and to define an optimum ratio of the filler particle size relating to a given mechanical quality. The artificial corundum was chosen as the primary material, the waste corundum from the process of material mechanical treatment was chosen as the secondary one.
