The velocity field in the area behind the automotive vent was measured by hot-wire anenemometry in detail and intensity of turbulence was calculated. Numerical simulation of the same flow field was performed using Computational fluid dynamics in commecial software STAR-CCM+. Several turbulence models were tested and compared with Large Eddy Simulation. The influence of turbulence model on the results of air flow from the vent was investigated. The comparison of simulations and experimental results showed that most precise prediction of flow field was provided by Spalart-Allmaras model. Large eddy simulation did not provide results in quality that would compensate for the increased computing cost.

In large eddy simulation of turbulent flow, because of the spatial filter, inhomogeneity and anisotropy affect the subgrid stress via the mean flow gradient. A method of evaluating the mean effects is to split the subgrid stress tensor into “rapid” and “slow” parts. This decomposition was introduced by Shao et al. (1999) and applied to A Priori tests of existing subgrid models in the case of a turbulent mixing layer. In the present work, the decomposition is extended to the case of a passive scalar in inhomogeneous turbulence. The contributions of rapid and slow subgrid scalar flux, both in the equations of scalar variance and scalar flux, are analyzed. A Priori numerical tests are performed in a turbulent Couette flow with a mean scalar gradient. Results are then used to evaluate the performances of different popular subgrid scalar models. It is shown that existing models can not well simulate the slow part and need to be improved. In order to improve the modeling, an extension of the model proposed by Cui et al. (2004) is introduced for the slow part, whereas the Scale-Similarity model is used reproduce the rapid part. Combining both models, A Priori tests lead to a better performance. However, the remaining problem is that none eddy-diffusion model can correctly represent the strong scalar dissipation near the wall. This problem will be addressed in future work.

A dissipative scale-similarity subgrid model was recently proposed in which only the dissipative part of the subgrid stresses was added to the momentum equations. This was achieved by adding the gradient of a subgrid stress only when its sign agreed with that of the corresponding viscous term. In the present work, this idea is used the other way around as forcing in hybrid large eddy simulation–Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes: only the part of a subgrid stress term that corresponds to back scatter is added to the momentum equations. The forcing triggers resolved turbulence in the transition region between the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes and large eddy simulation regions. The new approach is evaluated for fully developed channel flow at Re τ =4000. It is found that the forcing indeed does increase the resolved turbulence in the transition region. The magnitude of the production (i.e. back scatter) due to forcing in the equation for resolved kinetic energy is of the order of that due to the usual strain-rate production term. The present approach of using back scatter from a scale-similarity model can also probably be useful for triggering transition.

Jet in a cross-flow (JICF) is a flow arrangement found in many engineering applications, especially in gas turbine air–fuel mixing. Understanding of scalar mixing in JICF is important for low NOx burner design and operation, and numerical simulation techniques can be used to understand both spatial and temporal variation of air–fuel mixing quality in such applications. In this paper, mixing of the jet stream with the cross-flow is simulated by approximating the jet flow as a passive scalar and using the large eddy simulation (LES) technique to simulate the turbulent velocity field. A posteriori test is conducted to assess three dynamic subgrid scale models in modeling jet and cross-flow interaction with the boundary layer flow field. Simulated mean and Reynolds stress component values for velocity field and concentration fields are compared against experimental data to assess the capability of the LES technique, which showed good agreement between numerical and experimental results. Similarly, time mean and standard deviation values of passive scalar concentration also showed good agreement with experimental data. In addition, LES results are further used to discuss the scalar mixing field in the downstream mixing region.
