Purpose This paper aims to provide a technical insight into a selection of recent developments and applications involving terahertz sensing technology. Design/methodology/approach Following an introduction, the first part of this paper considers a selection of research activities involving terahertz radiation sources and detectors. The second part seeks to illustrate how the technology is exerting a commercial impact and discusses a number of product developments and applications. Findings Terahertz sensing is a rapidly developing field and a strong body of research seeks to develop sources and detectors with enhanced features which often exploit novel materials, phenomena and technologies. Commercialisation is gathering pace, and a growing number of companies are producing terahertz sensing and imaging products which are finding a diversity of applications. Originality/value This provides details of recent research, product developments and applications involving terahertz sensing technology.

Slowing down the phase velocity of light in media has various applications. The generation of electromagnetic radiation using coherent Cherenkov mechanism is among them. Meanwhile, there is a need for compact terahertz radiation sources. Due to outstanding graphene properties, heterostructures consisting of alternating graphene/dielectric layers can operate as a medium for the generation of terahertz radiation. In the present paper, the slowing down and propagation coefficients for the modes supported in a two-layer graphene structure are studied. The study is conducted by means of the operator approach to wave propagation in stratified structures. The operator approach allows one to use coordinates-free notations and to consider consequently arbitrarily complex heterostructures (including anisotropic layers, for instance). The influence of interlayer distance and the value of graphene chemical potential on waves slowdown is determined. The obtained results open up prospects for creating a new type of terahertz radiation sources.

Problem formulating. Currently, there are no compact, efficient terahertz radiation sources operating at room temperature. To create such sources and amplifiers, structures based on graphene with DC-current can be used. Goal. Finding conditions for achieving the negative real part of graphene conductivity and amplification of THz radiation in graphene with a direct electric current. Result. It is shown that for a certain value of direct electric current in graphene, the reflection coefficient of the THz wave incident on the structure based on graphene with DC-current exceeds unity, which indicates the amplification of THz radiation in the structure. The amplification of the THz radiation in graphene is achieved due to negative values of the real part of the graphene conductivity. Practical meaning. Results can be used to create sources and amplifiers of terahertz radiation.
