The present study is concerned with two-sided lid-driven incompressible flow in rectangular, deep cavities applying lattice Boltzmann method. After validating the code for the square cavity, solutions for cavities with an aspect ratio 1.5 and 4 were obtained for the Reynolds numbers of 100, 400, 1000 and 3200. The influence of the Reynolds number and aspect ratio on the flow pattern and on the characteristics of vortices inside the cavity was studied. Symmetric flow pattern was obtained for all investigated cases. The middle of the cavity is mostly influenced by the increase in the aspect ratio. Critical aspect ratio, at which the birth of a primary vortex in the middle of the cavity takes place, was determined to be between 2.7 and 2.725.

Unique character and common behavior are two distinguished things. In frontier nanoscience and nanotechnology, unique characters were normally obtained in some novel exotics materials such as metal-metal core-shell materials, metallic-semiconducting hybrid nanomaterials, and  organic-inorganics complex nano-compounds. On the other hand, normal behavior of natural phenomena including in nano-size objects were obviously predicted based on their exact size related to confinement effect, and capability to interact with another physical system  in nature.  Here, we report an example of unique character due to evolution nonlinear behavior observed in gold nanorod with their aspect-ratio dependence of optical nonlinearities investigated by femtosecond Z-scan measurements closed to resonance longitudinal surface plasmon peak in gold nanorods (Au NRs). Saturable absorption manifests itself at low excitation (laser irradiances < ~7.0 GW/cm2), while reverse saturable absorption dominates at higher excitation. Both the nonlinear processes are found to increase with the aspect ratio of Au NRs.  Based on the discrete dipole approximation, qualitative explanations are presented for the observed nonlinear behavior. While common behavior in metallic quantum dots or other shapes of metallic nanomaterials was not the significant in our observation.

This paper describes the induced pressure distribution, free-surface waves, vortical flow and wave drag of an exact solution of low-aspect-ratio flat-ship theory. An energy balance is derived which relates the spray drag, the energy carried away by the far-field waves and the vortical flow to the total wave drag.

A TLP is a buoyant platform containing four cylindrical columns. The purpose of this study was to consider the effects of different model solvers in the numerical solution on the flow pattern around the TLP. The flow around the TLP was numerically simulated with inviscid, laminar, and turbulent solvers. Three Froude numbers were run for each case. There was a symmetry plane that allowed simulating just one half of the flow field. Therefore, two columns along the symmetry plane were considered in the results discussion. Beside the generated surface waves there was a pair of vortex behind each column none of them were actually symmetric. The vortex behind the first column significantly affected the flow pattern around the second one in the manner that the vortex behind the first column was larger than the next one. In all cases the outer vortex was larger than the inner one. The obtained results showed that the generated waves of the inviscid flow were smoother than the turbulent flow, and also those of the turbulent flow were smoother than the laminar ones. Compared to the mentioned results, the influence of the flow velocity on the wave heights was more significant.
