Using the Eliashberg theory of superconductivity we have examined several properties of a model in which electrons are coupled only to rattling phonon modes represented by a sharp peak in the electron–phonon coupling function. Our choice of parameters was guided by experiments on β-pyrochlore oxide superconductor KOs2Os6. We have calculated the temperature dependence of the superconducting gap edge; the quasi-particle decay rate; the NMR relaxation rate assuming that the coupling between the nuclear spins and the conduction electrons is via a contact hyperfine interaction, which would be appropriate for the O-site in KOs2Os6; and the microwave conductivity. We examined the limit of very strong coupling by considering three values of the electron–phonon coupling parameter λ = 2.38, 3, and 5 and did not assume that the rattler frequency Ω0 is temperature dependent in the superconducting state. We obtained a very unusual temperature dependence of the superconducting gap edge Δ(T), very much like the one extracted from photoemission experiments on KOs2O6.

Abstract(Quasi-)one-dimensional systems exhibit various fascinating properties such as Luttinger liquid behavior, Peierls transition, novel topological phases, and the accommodation of unique quasiparticles (e.g., spinon, holon, and soliton, etc.). Here we study molybdenum blue bronze A0.3MoO3 (A = K, Rb), a canonical quasi-one-dimensional charge-density-wave material, using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our experiment suggests that the normal phase of A0.3MoO3 is a prototypical Luttinger liquid, from which the charge-density-wave emerges with decreasing temperature. Prominently, we observe strong renormalizations of band dispersions, which are recognized as the spectral function of Holstein polaron derived from band-selective electron-phonon coupling in the system. We argue that the strong electron-phonon coupling plays an important role in electronic properties and the charge-density-wave transition in blue bronzes. Our results not only reconcile the long-standing heavy debates on the electronic properties of blue bronzes but also provide a rare platform to study interesting excitations in Luttinger liquid materials.

Strong Confinement

The optical absorption behaviour of polar semiconductor quantum dots has been investigated in the strong confinement regime using the adiabatic approximation of Landau and Pekar. It has been shown that optical absorption coefficient becomes strongly size dependent below a certain value of the confinement length and also exhibits interesting crossing behaviour when studied as a function of the electron–phonon coupling constant for different values of the confinement length. It has furthermore been shown that the ratio of the one-phonon part of the oscillator strength to the zero-phonon contribution can be significantly large in a small quantum dot and can also exhibit an interesting minimum structure at certain value of the confinement length for intermediate electron–phonon coupling.
