The effects of four rates of N and P fertilizers applied in the spring to alfalfa and crested wheatgrass, grown singly and in mixture, at three ages of stand were investigated. N fertilizer increased yields and protein content of the grass in the year of application regardless of age of stand; the effect in subsequent years depended upon the level of yield in the year of application. The results indicated that grass should be fertilized with N every year at a rate related to the amounts of N removed from the soil in the preceding year. N fertilizer also increased the yield of the mixture in the year of application. The proportion of alfalfa in the hay mixture decreased with age and with applications of N fertilizer. This effect of N fertilizer was brought about by changes in the absolute yield of the grass component but not that of the alfalfa component of the mixture. The management of the mixture is affected by management of the grass component and any increases in yield and quality of the grass are at the expense of the alfalfa. P fertilizer slightly increased the P content of all forages, regardless of age of stand, both in the year of application and in the succeeding years, but did not increase yields.

The reaction Ni58(γ, n)Ni57 has been investigated between 12- and 24-Mev maximum photon energy. The absolute yield value at 22 Mev was found to be much lower than reported previously. Also, a shorter half-life of Ni57 was obtained. The cross section was determined using two different methods.

A source of ions consisting of a low voltage arc, yielding homogeneous ion currents of the order of ½ milliampere at low potentials is described. With such a source, atomic disintegrations have been observed with ion beam energies of less than 8kV. Approximate values of the absolute yield for protons from the deuteron on deuterium disintegration, and α-particles from the protons on lithium disintegration are obtained.

The ozonides of several phosphites in solution in dichloromethane have been reacted with some scavengers of singlet oxygen (1O2) like rubrene (2), tetraphenylcyclopentadienone (4), and 9,10-diphenylanthracene (6). These ozonides react on the scavengers (−47 °C < t <30 °C) upon their decomposition. The Foote curves obtained by varying the respective concentrations of ozonides and of scavengers lead to parameters similar to those obtained upon the photooxidation of the scavengers by 1O2. Results confirm that these ozonides can lead to the formation of 1O2. The absolute yield of 1O2 is 100% (ρ = 1). These results also confirm the high efficiency of the rubrene toward 1O2 (γ = 1) and the lower efficiency of the tetraphenylcyclopentadienone (γ = 0.46). However, the low value (γ = 0.3) for the efficiency of the 9,10-diphenylanthracene (4) is unexpected.

Four defoliation treatments before flowering were imposed on twelve genotypes from three subspecies of Trifolium subterraneum. The experiment was conducted on a sandy soil with irrigation supplementing the natural rainfall. The severest defoliation doubled the percentage and tripled the absolute yield of buried seed. Highly significant differences were found between the genotypes within subspecies, indicating that selection for subterranean clover pastures with a range of ability to bury burrs is possible. No differences in genotype or subspecies response to defoliation nor differences of absolute seed yields were obtained. It is suggested that sward density is very important when experiments evaluating subterranean clover genotypes include defoliation treatments of the swards.
