Paeoniflorin (PF) is an important pharmacological component of some Chinese traditional herbal formulas, such as Bai Shao, Chi Shao, and Dan Pi, which have been clinically used for centuries. Although many experimental studies have explored a wide range of pharmacological properties of PF, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunoregulatory, and prevention of insulin resistance, there is no review to describe these reported effects systematically, especially the antitumor effect and the underlying mechanisms. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the anticancer profiles both in vitro and in vivo of PF. Moreover, we highlight the integrated molecular mechanisms of PF and contemplate its future prospects as a potential anticancer drug.

We review our recent progress on the study of new nonlinear mechanisms of pulse shaping in passively mode-locked fiber lasers. These include a mode-locking regime featuring pulses with a triangular distribution of the intensity, and spectral compression arising from nonlinear pulse propagation. We also report on our recent experimental studies unveiling new types of vector solitons with processing states of polarization for multi-pulse and tightly bound-state soliton (soliton molecule) operations in a carbon nanotube (CNT) mode-locked fiber laser with anomalous dispersion cavity.

The discovery of ferromagnetism (FM) in wide band-gap semiconductors doped with transition metals (TM), known as DMSs, has attracted much interest. Among DMSs, the system of Mn-doped ZnO is considered as the most promising candidates. This paper focuses primarily on the recent progress in the experimental studies of ZnO:Mn DMSs.

AbstractRecently, experimental studies on the dynamical structure of liquid metals have been actively carried out by the inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) technique using the synchrotron radiation which have stimulated theoretical studies. In this paper, recent progress in theoretical studies on the dynamical structure of liquid metals are described in two approaches, i.e. the theoretical approach based on the memory function formalism and the various kinds of computer simulations.

Diamanes are 2D diamond-like films that are nanometers in thickness. Diamanes can exist as bilayer or multilayer graphene with various modes of stacking and interlayer covalent sp3 bonds. The term “diamane” is used broadly for a variety of diamond-like materials at the nanoscale, from individual diamond clusters to nanocrystal films. A short overview of recent progress in the investigation of diamanes, starting from the first theoretical predictions to practical realization, is presented. The results of both theoretical and experimental studies on diamanes with various atomic structures and types of functionalization are considered. It is shown that diamanes are stronger than graphene and graphane and have wide bandgaps ranging from 3.1 to 4.5 eV depending on the structure. Diamane-like structures have been obtained using different experimental techniques, and their structures have been determined by Raman spectroscopy. The potential applications of these carbon nanostructures are briefly reviewed.
