Fe/Si multi-layer films were fabricated on Si (100) substrates utilizing radio frequency magnetron sputtering system. Si/β-FeSi2 structure was found in the films after the deposition. Structural characterization of Fe-silicide sample was performed by transmission electron microscopy, to explore the dependence of the microstructure of β-FeSi2 film on the preparation parameters. It was found that β-FeSi2 particles were formed after the deposition without annealing, whose size is less than 20nm ,with a direct band-gap of 0.94eV in room temperature. After annealing at 850°C, particles grow lager, however the stability of thin films was still good.

A series of mixed fluoride compositions with PbF2 and ScF3 were prepared by heating the intimate mixtures of component fluorides at 600 °C for 10 h followed by slowly cooling to room temperature. The products obtained were analyzed by powder XRD to reveal the phases present in them and hence the low-temperature phase equilibria in the PbF2-ScF3 system. The phase equilibria show the fluorite-type solid solution up to the composition of about 15 mol% of ScF3 in the PbF2 lattice. The unit cell volume decreases with increasing ScF3 contents in the fluorite-type solid solutions. Beyond the solubility limit, the biphasic mixture of the cubic fluorite-type solid solution and leftover ScF3 is found to exist.

In the present study nanostructured Cu ( Mo ) compound with 15 weight percent Mo was produced by mechanical alloying using a planetary ball mill. The milling operation was carried out in hardened chromium steel vial and balls under argon atmosphere with a constant ball to powder ratio of 10:1. The structural evolution and characterization of powder particles after different milling times were studied by X-Ray Diffraction, SEM observation and Microhardness measurements. The results showed the displacement of broadened Cu peaks to lower angles, because of dissolving Mo in Cu . The final product was a nanocomposite contains nanocrystalline Cu ( Mo ) supersaturated solid solution matrix and dispersion of nanometric Mo reinforcements. The microhardness of formed nanocomposite increased to 350HV because of grain refinement, formation of solid solution and dispersion hardening.

Well-dispersed Nd1.6Eu0.4Zr2O7 solid solutions were successfully prepared by a convenient salt-assisted combustion process using glycine as fuel. The samples were characterized by XRD, Raman, TEM and HRTEM. The results showed that the Nd ion can be partially replaced by Eu ion. The substituted product was still single-phase solid solutions and the crystal form remained unchanged. TEM images showed that the Nd1.6Eu0.4Zr2O7 solid solutions were composed of well-dispersed sphere-shaped nanocrystals with an average size of 30 nm, which is consistent with the value obtained from XRD patterns using the Scherrer formula. Moreover, the fluorescent characterization of the Nd1.6Eu0.4Zr2O7 nanocrystals at 385 nm upon excitation was carried out at room temperature, and the results showed that there were some intense and prevailing emission peaks located at 590-650 nm.
