Raman shifting to the near-infrared, when possible, provides a simple and economical alternative to the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) or difference frequency mixing approach. We report the production of 1.30- to 1.55-μm radiation from first Stokes Raman shifting in a single-pass, open (no capillary waveguide), hydrogen-filled Raman cell (constructed in-house) pumped with a Nd:YAG/dye laser combination operating near 900 nm. A maximum of 10 mJ (19% efficiency) of first Stokes energy was measured for the highest cell pressure (490 psia) and input pulse energy (53 mJ). The quality of the first Stokes output is similar to the dye laser output as indicated by polarization, shot-to-shot energy fluctuation, beam diameter, and linewidth. A characterization of the Stokes and anti-Stokes output was also conducted including one-dimensional spatial intensity profiles and output line dependence on input pulse energy and cell pressure. A large first Stokes conversion efficiency has been attributed to little production of higher-order Stokes and anti-Stokes lines.

A multiwavelength laser operating on the basis of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is demonstrated in a single mode fiber (SMF) coupled with a feedback loop and an optical circulator. Ten simultaneous Stokes and anti-Stokes lines are obtained with a line spacing of either 0.08 or 0.16 nm at a Brillouin pump (BP) power of 14 dBm. The use of a 50/50 fused coupler gives the highest number of lines at a Stokes power of approximately 8 dBm. The anti-Stokes lines are generated by four-wave mixing and bidirectional operation of the system. This Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) is capable of operating at any wavelength, depending completely on the BP wavelength. Due to the built-in feedback mechanism, its operation is free from the need for any additional active linear gain medium, such as erbium-doped fibers used in a Brillouin erbium fiber laser. Further, the SMF can in principle be replaced with a highly nonlinear waveguide, such as a photonic crystal waveguide, to make a compact multiwavelength BFL.

The Stokes lines for Г( z ) are the positive and negative imaginary axes, where all terms in the divergent asymptotic expansion for In Г( z ) have the same phase. On crossing these lines from the right to the left half-plane, infinitely many subdominant exponentials appear, rather than the usual one. The exponentials increase in magnitude towards the negative real axis (anti-Stokes line), where they add to produce the poles of Г( z ). Corresponding to each small exponential is a separate component asymptotic series in the expansion for In Г( z ). If each is truncated near its least term, its exponential switches on smoothly across the Stokes lines according to the universal error-function law. By appropriate subtractions from In Г( z ), the switching-on of successively smaller exponentials can be revealed. The procedure is illustrated by numerical computations.

An argon ion laser operating at 4765 Å and a helium-cadmium laser operating at 4416 Å have been used as radiation sources to study Brillouin scattering in seven organic liquids. The Brillouin spectra were investigated at 90° with a pressure scanned Fabry-Perot spectrometer. The measured frequency shifts between the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines were used to determine the hypersonic velocities of thermal waves at frequencies between 4.8 and 7.2 GHz. No dispersion of the hypersound could be detected.
