Marine energy is gaining more and more interest in recent years and, in comparison to fossil energy, is very attractive due to predictable energy output, renewable and sustainable, the Horizontal Axis Hydrokinetic Turbine (HAHT) is one of the most innovative energy systems that allow transforms the kinetic energy into electricity. This work presents a new series of hydrofoil sections, named here NTSXX20, and was designed to work at different turbine functioning requirement. These hydrofoils have excellent hydrodynamic characteristics at the operating Reynolds number. The design of the turbine has been done utilising XFLR5 code and QBlade which is a Blade-Element Momentum solver with a blade design feature. Tidal current turbine has been able to capture about 50% from TSR range of 5 to 9 with maximum CPower of 51 % at TSR=6,5.   The hydrodynamics performance for the CFD cases was presented and was employed to explain the complete response of the turbine.

This paper conducts a numerical investigation on the hydrodynamic performance of a portable autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The portable AUV is designed to cruise and perform some tasks autonomously in the underwater world. However, its dynamic performance is strongly affected by hydrodynamic effects. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of the portable AUV for its accurate dynamic modeling and control. In this work, based on the designed portable AUV, a comprehensive hydrodynamic performance investigation was conducted by adopting the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Firstly, the mechanical structure of the portable AUV was briefly introduced, and the dynamic model of the AUV, including the hydrodynamic term, was established. Then, the unknown hydrodynamic coefficients in the dynamic model were estimated through the towing experiment and the plane-motion-mechanism (PMM) experiment simulation. In addition, considering that the portable AUV was affected by wave forces when cruising near the water surface, the influence of surface waves on the hydrodynamic performance of the AUV under different wave conditions and submerged depths was analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of our method was verified by experiments on the standard models, and a physical experiment platform was built in this work to facilitate hydrodynamic performance investigations of some portable small-size AUVs.

Wind energy is one of the renewable energy resources which is clean and sustainable energy and the wind turbine is used for harnessing energy from the wind. The blades are the key components of a wind turbine to convert wind energy into rotational energy. Recently, wingtip devices are used in the blades of horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT), which decreases the vortex and drag, while increases the lift and thereby improve the performance of the turbine. In the present study, a winglet is used at the tip of an NREL phase VI wind turbine blade. Solidworks, Pointwise, and Ansys-Fluent are used for geometric modeling, computational grid generation, and CFD simulation, respectively. The computational result obtained using SST k-ω turbulence modeling is well validated with the experimental data of NREL at 5 and 7 m/s of wind speeds. Numerical investigation of stall characteristics is carried out for wingleted blade at higher turbulence intensity (21% and 25%) and angle of attack (00 to 300 at 50 intervals) at 7 m/s wind speed. The result found that wingletd blade delay stall to 150 for both the cases of turbulence intensity. Increasing the turbulence intensity increases the lift coefficient at stall angle but drag coefficient also increases and thus a lower aerodynamic performance (CL/CD ratio = 13) is obtained. Operating horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbine (HAHT) generates noise affecting the ocean environment adversely. Therefore, it is essential to determine the noise characteristics of such types of HAHT, as large-scale turbine sets would release more noise pollution to the ocean. Like other rotating machinery, the hydrodynamic noise generated by the rotating turbine has been known to be the most important noise source. In the present work, the transient turbulent flow field of the HAHT is obtained by incompressible large eddy simulation, thereafter, the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings acoustic analogy formulation is carried out to predict the noise generated from the pressure fluctuations of the blade surface. The coefficient of power is compared with the experimental results, with a good agreement being achieved. It is seen from the pressure contours that the 80% span of the blade has the most severe pressure fluctuations, which concentrate on the region of leading the edge of the airfoil and the suction surface of the airfoil. Then, the noise characteristics around a single turbine are systematically studied, in accordance with the results of the flow field. The noise characteristics around the whole turbine are also investigated to determine the directionality of the noise emission of HAHT.
