In this work, Lamb wave generation and propagation have been modelled in composite plates. Actuation and acquisition of signals when the PZT transducers are tied to the structure or bonded with an adhesive layer are investigated. The effect of adhesive thickness and actuation frequency of Lamb wave have been examined.

In this paper a novel concept of the MFC based IDT, Tunable Interdigital Transducer (T-IDT), is presented. The proposed transducer is the extension of the MFC based IDT, where the solid comb electrodes are replaced by series of discrete, stripe electrodes which can be connected independently into the groups and connected to the power source. The span between the centers of the electrodes' groups connected to the same phase are corresponding to the nominal wavelength of the wave excited by the transducer. This makes possible matching to different wavelengths without a need of physical changes of the electrodes’ layout.

This article presents the results of theoretical and experimental investigations of characteristic changes of Lamb wave excitation and scattering by a strip-like horizontal delamination in a layered elastic waveguide for Lamb waves induced by a piezoelectric wafer active sensor. The boundary integral equation method is used to describe wave propagation in an infinite layered waveguide with a delamination, while the frequency domain spectral element method is employed to model the dynamic behaviour of the piezoelectric wafer active sensor, which allows to simulate debonding between the piezoelectric wafer active sensor and the waveguide. Experimental investigations of the dynamic interaction of the piezoelectric wafer active sensor with a layered plate containing a horizontal delamination is conducted for several damage scenarios, showing a good agreement with the results obtained using the developed mathematical model. The obtained mathematical model is employed to analyse alteration of the piezo-induced Lamb waves including modes’ decomposition due to delamination. The conversion and/or conservation of the Lamb waves on account of a delamination is investigated. The electro-mechanical impedance of the piezoelectric transducer and the stress intensity factors of a delamination are analysed in dependence on the delamination location.

This study presents a novel method for composite damage identification using Lamb wave. A probabilistic integration of the elliptical loci method and the RAPID (reconstruction algorithm for probabilistic inspection of defects) in a Bayesian framework is proposed. The proposed method allows for the incorporation of multiple damage sensitive features in a rational manner to improve the reliability and robustness for a given array of sensors. Numerical studies are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and to compare its accuracy with existing methods. Experimental investigation using a realistic composite plate is made to further validate the proposed method. The influence of damage location and the number of participating sensors on the performance of the proposed method is discussed. Results indicate that the proposed method yields more accurate and reliable results comparing with existing methods.
