A tapered femoral total hip stem with a debonded stem-cement interface and an unsupported distal tip subjected to constant axial load was evaluated using two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric finite element analysis. The analysis was performed to test if the mechanical condition suggest that a “taper-lock” with a debonded viscoelastic bone cement might be an alternative approach to cement fixation of stem type cemented hip prosthesis. Effect of stem-cement interface conditions (bonded, debonded with and without friction) and viscoelastic response (creep and relaxation) of acrylic bone cement on cement mantle stresses and axial displacement of the stem was also investigated. Stem debonding with friction increased maximum cement von Mises stress by approximately 50 percent when compared to the bonded stem. Of the stress components in the cement mantle, radial stresses were compressive and hoop stresses were tensile and were indicative of mechanical taper-lock. Cement mantle stress, creep and stress relaxation and stem displacement increased with increasing load level and with decreasing stem-cement interface friction. Stress relaxation occur predominately in tensile hoop stress and decreased from 1 to 46 percent over the conditions considered. Stem displacement due to cement mantle creep ranged from 614 μm to 1.3 μm in 24 hours depending upon interface conditions and load level.

The relaxation properties of GH4169 alloy were studied contrastively at temperatures ranging from 600 oC to 700 °C and initial stress ranging from 550 MPa to 850 MPa. The relationship between the microstructure and relaxation behavior was evaluated using transmission electron microscopy techniques. It was found that the relaxation limit and relaxation stability of the alloy decreased obviously with the increase of temperature. Further investigations show that the relaxation behavior is mainly depend on both precipitate characteristics and its interaction with dislocations. The alloy with higher strength lever has more excellent stress relaxation stability, because of the inhibition of a large number subgrains on dislocations motion.

We have used transmission electron microscopy and optical microscopy to examine the effect that grain size and heat treatment have on twinning and microcracking in polycrystalline Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ. It is shown that isothermal oxygenation heat treatments produce twin structures consisting of parallel twins, with a characteristic spacing that increases with increasing grain size. Slow cooling through the temperature range where the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transformation induces twinning, however, produces a structure consisting of a hierarchical arrangement of intersecting twins, the scale of which appears to be independent of grain size. It is also shown that the microcracking induced by anisotropic changes in grain dimensions on cooling or during oxygenation can be suppressed if the grain size of the material is kept below about 1 μm. The results are examined in the light of current models for transformation twinning and microcracking and the models used to access the effect other processing variables such as oxygen content, doping or heat treatment may have on the microstructure of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ.

Tailorability is an important advantage of composites. Incorporating new bio-reinforcements into composites can contribute to using agricultural wastes and creating tougher and more reliable materials. Nevertheless, the huge number of possible natural material combinations works against finding optimal composite designs. Here, machine learning was employed to effectively predict fracture toughness properties of multiscale bio-nano-composites. Charpy impact tests were conducted on composites with various combinations of two new bio fillers, pistachio shell powders, and fractal date seed particles, as well as nano-clays and short latania fibers, all which reinforce a poly(propylene)/ethylene–propylene–diene-monomer matrix. The measured energy absorptions obtained were used to calculate strain energy release rates as a fracture toughness parameter using linear elastic fracture mechanics and finite element analysis approaches. Despite the limited number of training data obtained from these impact tests and finite element analysis, the machine learning results were accurate for prediction and optimal design. This study applied the decision tree regressor and adaptive boosting regressor machine learning methods in contrast to the K-nearest neighbor regressor machine learning approach used in our previous study for heat deflection temperature predictions. Scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the nano-clay dispersion and impact fracture morphology.

A failed compass hinge external fixator for fingers has been analyzed. The device consists of polymer parts manufactured from polyetherimide. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to investigate the principal stresses in the device under different loading conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the fracture surfaces. The FEA showed that the maximum principal stress was greater than the fatigue strength of polyetherimide. The SEM fractographs confirm that failure was by brittle fatigue.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) replication transcription complex (RTC) is a multi-domain protein responsible for replicating and transcribing the viral mRNA inside a human cell. Attacking RTC function with pharmaceutical compounds is a pathway to treating COVID-19. Conventional tools, e.g., cryo-electron microscopy and all-atom molecular dynamics (AAMD), do not provide sufficiently high resolution or timescale to capture important dynamics of this molecular machine. Consequently, we develop an innovative workflow that bridges the gap between these resolutions, using mesoscale fluctuating finite element analysis (FFEA) continuum simulations and a hierarchy of AI-methods that continually learn and infer features for maintaining consistency between AAMD and FFEA simulations. We leverage a multi-site distributed workflow manager to orchestrate AI, FFEA, and AAMD jobs, providing optimal resource utilization across HPC centers. Our study provides unprecedented access to study the SARS-CoV-2 RTC machinery, while providing general capability for AI-enabled multi-resolution simulations at scale.
