AbstractOxide ion conducting yttria-stabilised zirconia ceramics show the onset of electronic conduction under a small bias voltage. Compositions with a high yttria content undergo a transition from p-type to n-type behavior at voltages in the range 2.4 to 10 V, which also depends on oxygen partial pressure. Surface reactions have a direct influence on bulk electronic conductivities, with possible implications for voltage-induced flash phenomena and resistive switching.

In this work, Yttria (Y2O3) was successfully doped into tetragonal 3mol% yttria stabilized Zirconia (3YSZ) by high energy-mechanical milling to synthesize 8mol% yttria stabilized Zirconia (8YSZ) used as an electrolyte for high temperature solid oxide fuel cells (HT-SOFC). This work aims to evaluate the densification and ionic conductivity of the sintered electrolytes at 1650°C. The bulk density was measured according to ASTM C373-17. The powder morphology and the microstructure of the sintered electrolytes were analyzed via Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The chemical analysis was obtained with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Also, X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to obtain structural information of the starting materials and the sintered electrolytes. The ionic conductivity was obtained through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the air as a function of temperatures at a frequency range of 100(mHz)-100(kHz). It is found that the 3YSZ has a higher density than the 8YSZ. The impedance analysis showed that the ionic conductivity of the prepared 8YSZ at 800°C is0.906 (S.cm) and it was 0.214(S.cm) of the 3YSZ. Besides, 8YSZ has a lower activation energy 0.774(eV) than that of the 3YSZ 0.901(eV). Thus, the prepared 8YSZ can be nominated as an electrolyte for the HT-SOFC.

The Solid Oxide Membrane (SOM) process for magnesium production involves the direct electrolysis of magnesium oxide for energy efficient and low-carbon magnesium production. In the SOM process, magnesium oxide is dissolved in a molten oxy-fluoride flux. An oxygen-ion-conducting SOM tube, made from yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), is submerged in the flux. The operating life of the electrolytic cell can be improved by understanding degradation processes in the YSZ, and one way the YSZ degrades is by yttria diffusion out of the YSZ. By adding small amounts of YF3 to the flux, yttria diffusion can be controlled. The diffusion of yttria into the flux was quantified by determining the yttria concentration profile as a function of immersion time in the flux and distance from the flux-YSZ interface. Yttria concentrations were determined using x-ray spectroscopy. The diffusion process was modeled using a numerical approach with an analytic solution to Fick?s second law. These modeling and experimental methods allowed for the determination of the optimum YF3 concentration in the flux to minimize yttria diffusion and improve membrane stability. Furthermore, the effects of common impurities in magnesium ores, such as calcium oxide, silica, and sodium oxide/sodium peroxide, on YSZ stability are being investigated.

Abstract. Currently, Yttria-stabilized zirconia solid state electrolyte are widely used in various fields . The basic performance of Yttria-stabilized zirconia (5YSZ) prepared by different synthesis methods and sintering temperatures are studied in this paper ,their phase compositions and microstructure are studied with XRD and SEM. The ionic conductivity of 5YSZ sintered at different temperature are studied with A.C. impedance spectroscopy measurement.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are expected to be a future power source. Simulation analyses of SOFCs can help to understand well the interactive functions among the multiphysics phenomena in the SOFC system. A three-dimensional multiphysics finite-element model was used to simulate the performance of a half-cell SOFC with (Pr0.7Sr0.3)MnO3±δ∕8mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) composite cathode on one side of the 8YSZ electrolyte before and after aging. Multiphysics phenomena in the SOFC were considered in the modeling. The current/voltage curves simulated matched the experimental data before and after aging. The average current density was found to have a linear relationship to the logarithm of the effective exchange current density. The effect of the effective ionic conductivity of the composite cathode was more apparent for small total effective ionic conductivity values than for large ones.
