A copper-tolerant isolate of Scenedesmus from Sudbury, Ontario, cultured in medium completely lacking copper, lost its ability to grow at high copper concentrations after 10 generations. The change was sudden in onset and relatively rapid. The algae had previously been maintained on medium with micronutrient levels of copper and had retained their tolerance over 7 years of laboratory culture.The tolerance of the copper depleted cells to nickel and cobalt also decreased. Their tolerance to cadmium and silver was unchanged by copper depletion. The situation for zinc tolerance was less clear, but there was no significant decrease over the range tested.When copper-depleted cells were cultured in complete medium with micronutrient levels of copper, copper tolerance increased after four divisions and recovered to the original state after eight divisions. Plate assays indicated that all of the cells in the culture were recovering i.e., this was not a reselection of a few tolerant cells.The results are discussed in terms of possible tolerance mechanisms, and their implications for the occurrence of multiple or cotolerance.

To investigate the role of iron, ascorbate, and fructose on copper depletion and the effect of copper depletion on neonatal lung collagen, elastin, and surfactant, female rabbits were fed a control diet [10 parts per million (ppm) copper], a basal marginal copper diet (1.5 ppm), or a basal diet containing a high concentration of iron (1,750 ppm), ascorbic acid (1%, wt/wt), or fructose (20% of carbohydrates, wt/wt) or a combination of iron, ascorbic acid, and fructose throughout gestation. Whereas 10% of neonates in the control group died in the first 24 h, 27-67% of the offspring of rabbits fed the marginal copper diet died. Birth weight was also lower for the pups of the females fed the marginal copper diets. Lungs of neonates born to females fed iron or ascorbate and marginal copper diets had low levels of copper, high proportions of acid-extractable, high-molecular-weight collagen, and low lysyl-oxidase activities, consistent with incomplete maturation of collagen. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluids of newborns whose mothers were fed marginal copper diets alone or in combination with iron and/or ascorbate had lower levels of total surfactant phospholipids than the fluids from lungs of control newborns. The lower surfactant phospholipid content of these groups could be attributed mainly to lower phosphatidylcholine and, in particular, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine levels. These results suggest that high maternal intakes of iron, ascorbate, or their combination in pregnancy deplete biologically available copper, which in turn induces neonatal lung abnormalities.

SummaryExperiments were conducted to determine why different lots of Borate Buffer reagent affect the clot lysis times obtained in the fibrinolytic assay of Streptokinase. Minerals naturally occurring in distilled water were screened individually to determine their influence on lysis. Copper was found to have a very pronounced effect in this regard on the fibrinolytic system in that low levels reduce the lysis time and high levels increase it.

This paper investigates the fresh and durability properties of the high-performance concrete by replacing cement with 15% Silica fume and simultaneously replacing fine aggregates with 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% copper slag at w/b ratio of 0.23. Five mixes were analysed and compared with the standard concrete mix. Fresh properties show an increase in the slump with the increase in the quantity of copper slag to the mix. Sorptivity, chloride penetration, UPV and carbonation results were very encouraging at 50% copper slag replacement levels. Microstructure analysis of these mixes shows the emergence of C-S-H gel for nearly all mixes indicating densification of the interfacial transition zone of the concrete.
