SrTiO 3 (STO) thin film was prepared on single crystal MgO (100) substrate by rf magnetron sputtering as a buffer layer of superconducting thin film. Sputtering conditions influence to the structural property were investigated. Highly epitaxial a-axis oriented STO thin film with extremely smooth surface was obtained by optimizing the sputtering parameters. YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ (YBCO) thin film with critical temperature (T c ) of 89.8 K was obtained on STO buffer. Surface morphology of YBCO thin film was also improved. The effects of STO buffer were discussed in comparison with YBCO thin films on MgO substrate.

Phenomena resembling a tunneling behavior have been observed on dc sputtered Nd1+xBa2-xu3Oy c-axis oriented films. The current voltage characteristics at 4.2K give evidence of quasiparticle tunneling current as usually measured in superconductor-insulator-normal metal or superconductor-insulator-superconductor junctions, with normal resistance values of about 10Ω. In the conductance curves, peak at about +/-16mV are clearly visible. An analysis of these features is presented up to temperatures close to the sample critical temperature.

High-Tc superconducting thin films were deposited on MgO (100) and SrTiO 3 (110) substrates by rf magnetron sputtering of Bi2Sr2Ca3Cu4O x target. Critical temperature Tc above 78 K were obtained after annealing the films for one hour at 850°C in oxygen atmosphere. The films showed good stability of Tc and resistivity within a period of 30 days.

We have investigated the photolithography on the superconducting YBCO thin films with chemical etching. It was found that the films can be etched by HCl—H3PO4 mixing acid and the side-etching can be suppressed down to one micrometer. The influence on the critical temperature can be minimized to two degrees under well-controlled conditions.

We successfully used the pulsed laser ablation and deposition to prepare superconducting thin films of SmBaCuO under different growth parameters. The films were grown on both MgO (100) and SrTiO 3 (100) substrates. The best samples showed a good degree of orientation, having the θ-scan around the 005 reflection an FWHM ≈ 0.2°. We report the critical temperature as a function of the deposition parameters, comparing the results between the two substrates. We also estimate the critical current density at 60 K from the magnetization curve.

A new measurement technique of electrical parameters of superconducting thin films at the Very High Frequency (VHF) range is described, based on resonators with microstrip (MS) structures. The design of an optimal resonator was achieved, based on a thorough theoretical analysis, which is required for derivation of the exact configuration of the MS. A theoretical model is presented, from which an expression for the attenuation of a MS line can be derived. Accordingly, simulations were performed, and an optimal resonator for the VHF range was designed and implemented. Production constraints of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) limited the diameter of the sapphire substrate to 3″. Therefore, a meander configuration was formed to fit the long λ/4 MS line on the wafer. By measuring the complex input reflection coefficients of a λ/4 resonator, we extracted the quality factor, which is mainly affected by the dielectric and conductor attenuations. The experimental results are well fitted by the theoretical model. The dielectric attenuation was calculated using the quasi-static analysis of the MS line. An identical copper resonator was produced and measured to compare the properties of the YBCO resonator in reference to the copper one. A quality factor of ~6·105 was calculated for the YBCO resonator, three orders of magnitude larger than that of the copper resonator. The attenuation per unit length of the YBCO layer was smaller by more than five orders of magnitude than that of the copper.
