Flexible dielectric capacitors are becoming shining stars in modern electronic devices. Ceramic particles with large dielectric constants and benign compatibility are attractive candidates to enhance the energy storage density of pristine polymer capacitors while guaranteeing their flexibility. In this work, double-shell structure of Al2O3 (AO) and dopamine (PDA) were successively coated on the Nd-doped BaTiO3 (NBT) particles and then introduced into the Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. Obvious enhancement in dielectric constants was observed while the dielectric loss remained nearly constant. For the composite films with 1–4[Formula: see text]vol.% NBT@AO@PDA NPs, the maximum energy density of 9.1[Formula: see text]J/cm3 and energy efficiency of 65% was achieved at 430[Formula: see text]MV/m in the sample with 1[Formula: see text]vol.% filling ratio, which are 1.4 and 1.3 times larger than those of pristine PVDF at 450[Formula: see text]MV/m. The finite element simulation reveals the effective relief of the electric field concentration in the composite film induced by the AO and PDA layers. The greater improvement in the energy storage performance could be anticipated if the dispersity of NBT@AO@PDA NPs was further improved.

In this work, Co3S4/NiCo2S4 nano-arrays electrode with Co3S4 nanocones and NiCo2S4 nanosheets interlaced arrangement are prepared by the promising hydrothermal method. Compared with single Co3S4/NF or NiCo2S4/NF electrode, the prepared Co3S4/NiCo2S4/NF electrode exhibits excellent specific capacitance. At a current density of 2 mA cm−2, the surface capacitance is as high as 9036 mF cm−2, and it still maintains a surface capacitance of 5664 mF cm−2 at a current density of 8 mA cm−2. Co3S4/NiCo2S4/NF||ASC has a high electrochemical performance with a maximum energy density of 0.62 Wh cm−3 and a power density of 15.94 W cm−3. At a current density of 5 mA cm−2, the capacity retention rate is 83.75% after 3000 cycles.

Nanocrystals are promising structures, but they are too large for achieving maximum energy storage performance. We show that rescaling 3-nm particles through lithiation followed by delithiation leads to high-performance energy storage by realizing high capacitance close to the theoretical capacitance available via ion-to-atom redox reactions. Reactive force-field (ReaxFF) molecular dynamics simulations support the conclusion that Li atoms react with nickel oxide nanocrystals (NiO-n) to form lithiated core–shell structures (Ni:Li2O), whereas subsequent delithiation causes Ni:Li2O to form atomic clusters of NiO-a. This is consistent with in situ X-ray photoelectron and optical spectroscopy results showing that Ni2+ of the nanocrystal changes during lithiation–delithiation through Ni0 and back to Ni2+. These processes are also demonstrated to provide a generic route to rescale another metal oxide. Furthermore, assembling NiO-a into the positive electrode of an asymmetric device enables extraction of full capacitance for a counter negative electrode, giving high energy density in addition to robust capacitance retention over 100,000 cycles.
