Τα διδιάστατα διχαλκογενή μέταλλα μετάπτωσης έχουν προσελκύσει παγκόσμιο ενδιαφέρον τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες ύστερα από την επιτυχημένη απομόνωση του γραφενίου. Τα διχαλκογενή μέταλλα μετάπτωσης είναι ημιαγωγοί και διαθέτουν μοναδικές οπτοηλεκτρονικές ιδιότητες λόγω της υπέρλεπτης φύσης τους. Καθώς ο αριθμός των στρωμάτων τους μειώνεται, μετατρέπονται από ημιαγωγό έμμεσου ενεργειακού χάσματος σε ημιαγωγό άμεσου ενεργειακού χάσματος. Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή μελετώνται οι οπτικές ιδιότητες του μονοστρωματικού κρυστάλλου δισουλφίδιο βολφραμίου, μέλος της οικογένειας των διχαλκογενών μετάλλων μετάπτωσης, και την επίδραση του φωτοχημικού εμπλουτισμού με τη χρήση υπεριώδους παλμικού λέιζερ. Προτείνεται μια καινοτόμα μέθοδος εμπλουτισμού, η οποία μπορεί να ελέγξει την πυκνότητα ηλεκτρονίων στο μονοστρωματικό κρύσταλλο δισουλφίδιου βολφραμίου (1L-WS2). Ο φωτοχημικός εμπλουτισμός σε περιβάλλον χλωρίου με τη χρήση υπεριώδους παλμικού λέιζερ αποδείχθηκε πως είναι μια μέθοδος που παρέχει έλεγχο της συγκέντρωσης φορέων στο μονοστρωματικό κρύσταλλο WS2. Η συστηματική μετατόπιση κορυφής του ουδέτερου εξιτονίου προς μικρότερες τιμές ενέργειας στα φάσματα φωτοφωτάγειας είναι ένδειξη της μείωσης της συγκέντρωσης των ηλεκτρονίων στον κρύσταλλο και η ικανότητα του σταδιακού ελέγχου της πυκνότητας των φορέων με το χρόνο έκθεσης σε περιβάλλον χλωρίου. Η μετατόπιση του επιπέδου ενέργειας Fermi συνδέεται με τον έλεγχο της πυκνότητας ηλεκτρονίων λόγω του χλωρίου. Το φαινόμενο του φωτοχημικού εμπλουτισμού μπορεί να αντιστραφεί ύστερα από σάρωση της επιφάνειας του μονοστρωματικού κρυστάλλου με συνεχές λέιζερ σε περιβάλλον ατμόσφαιρας. Ο αμφίδρομος έλεγχος του επιπέδου Fermi σε συνδυασμό με την ικανότητα προεπιλεγμένης περιοχής του κρυστάλλου με τη χρήση του λέιζερ προσφέρει χωρικά ελεγχόμενο εμπλουτισμό σε κλίμακα μικρομέτρων. Αυτή η διαδικασία ενίσχυσε το ενδιαφέρον για τον έλεγχο της εκπομπής κυκλικά πολωμένου φωτός στις ζώνες του φωτοχημικά εμπλουτισμένου κρυστάλλου. Τα διχαλκογενή μέταλλα μετάπτωσης έχουν ενδιαφέρουσες ιδιότητες που αφορούν τη ζώνη και το σπιν των φορέων του υλικού λόγω της ισχυρής αλληλεπίδρασης τους. Αποδεικνύουμε τον έλεγχο της πόλωσης σπιν/ζώνης κατά 40% σε μονοστρωματικό κρύσταλλο WS2 ύστερα από το φωτοχημικό εμπλουτισμό. Η μείωση της κυκλικής πόλωσης μετά από το φωτοχημικό εμπλουτισμό σε περιβάλλον χλωρίου αποδίδεται στη μείωση των ελαττωμάτων του κρυσταλλικού πλέγματος καθώς επίσης και την αύξηση του χρόνου ζωής των εξιτονίων που δεν εκπέμπουν φωτόνια. Οι θεωρητικές προβλέψεις και οι μετρήσεις φασματοσκοπίας μεταβατικής απορρόφησης επιβεβαιώνουν τα αποτελέσματα μας. Επιπλέον αποδείξαμε πως ο βαθμός της κυκλικής πόλωσης εξαρτάται από τον τύπο υποστρώματος στον οποίο εναποτίθεται ο μονοστρωματικός κρύσταλλος αλλά και από τον φωτοχημικό εμπλουτισμό. Αυτά τα συμπεράσματα καθιστούν τα διχαλκογενή μέταλλα μετάπτωσης κατάλληλα υλικά για μελλοντικές εφαρμογές και αρχιτεκτονικές υπολογιστών.

Two types of silver-doped glass were used for direct laser recording of 2D and 3D photonic crystals. The first contained a diffusion layer (20 microns thick) with embedded silver nanoclusters of 20-nm average radius. 2D and 3D photonic crystals of submicron lattice parameters were fabricated by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation (l, = 355 nm) using four or five coherent intersecting beams. Under irradiation the clusters absorbing light energy are heated to high temperatures and become mobile due to the formation of liquid shells around them. Adjacent clusters move towards each other and towards the irradiated surface under local temperature gradients, form agglomerates and merge in periodically located "spots" of high light intensity in the interference field. The second type of glass, photosensitive to UV irradiation, contained in the bulk Ag+ and Ce3+ ions. Under UV irradiation excited electrons passed from Ce3+ to Ag+. The Ag atoms became neutral and under subsequent heat treatment of the glass at elevated temperatures have a tendency to form nanoclusters, thus “developing” the UV recorded patterns. Using nanosecond pulsed irradiation of 308 nm we have recorded 3D photonic crystals in the bulk of such glass.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) has attractive photocatalytic properties. However, the high recombination rate of the photo-excited charge carriers on this material often restricts application. Here, we report that hybridization of one dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNT) on two dimensional (2D) porous ZnO nanosheets (NS) can be a promising strategy to overcome some of the challenges of ZnO. Specifically, a pulsed laser ablation technique was utilized to hybridize 1D CNT with 2D porous ZnO NS in environmentally friendly as well as super-economic (short time, less than 10 min) conditions. The synthesized ZnO NS-CNT hybrids show a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for water splitting relative to their counterpart ZnO NS.

This paper presents a photoacoustic non-destructive evaluation (pNDE) system with an ultrahigh resolution for the detection of multi-scale damage in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. The pNDE system consists of three main components: a picosecond pulsed laser-based ultrasonic actuator, an ultrasound receiver, and a data acquisition/computing subsystem. During the operation, high-frequency ultrasound is generated by pulsed laser and recorded by an ultrasound receiver. By implementing a two-dimensional back projection algorithm, pNDE images can be reconstructed from the recorded ultrasound signals to represent the embedded damage. Both potential macroscopic and microscopic damages, such as surface notches and delamination in CFRP, can be identified by examining the reconstructed pNDE images. Three ultrasonic presentation modes including A-scan, B-scan, and C-scan are employed to analyze the recorded signals for the representation of the detected micro-scale damage in two-dimensional and three-dimensional images with a high spatial resolution of up to 60 µm. Macro-scale delamination and transverse ply cracks are clearly visualized, identifying the edges of the damaged area. The results of the study demonstrate that the developed pNDE system provides a non-destructive and robust approach for multi-scale damage detection in composite materials.

The breakup of a liquid sheet is of fundamental interest in the atomization of liquid fuels. The present study explores the breakup of a two-dimensional liquid sheet in the presence of co-flow air with emphasis on the extent to which liquid properties affect breakup. Three liquids, selected with varying values of viscosity and surface tension, are introduced through a twin-fluid, two-dimensional nozzle. A pulsed laser imaging system is used to determine the sheet structure at breakup, the distance and time to breakup, and the character of the ligaments and droplets formed. Experiments are conducted at two liquid flow rates with five flow rates of co-flowing air. Liquid properties affect the residence time required to initiate sheet breakup, and alter the time and length scales in the breakup mechanism.
