In this contribution we present an experimental study of 3D opal photonic crystals. The samples are opals constituted by colloidal silica spheres, realized with self-assembly technique. The sphere diameter is selected in order to obtain coupling of the photonic band gap with the emission from CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots. The quantum dots infiltrated in the opals is expected to be enhanced or suppressed depending on the detection angle from the photonic crystal. The structural and optical characterization of the SiO2 opal photonic crystals are performed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy and reflectivity spectroscopy. Measurements performed on samples permits to put into evidence the influence of the different preparation methods on the optical properties. Study of self-activated luminescence of the pure opals is also presented. It is shown that the luminescence of the sample with QDs have original QD emission and not due to the photonic crystal structure. The optical properties of colloidal core-shell semiconductor quantum dots of CdSe/ZnS which are prepared in our lab will be mention.

The effects of paraffin addition on the optical properties and crystallinity of selfassembled SiO2 photonic crystal (PC) were examined using a silica nanopowder. The silica nanopowder was fabricated using the well-known Stöber process. During the evaporation process for self-assembly of PC, the nanopowder content was 0.05 or 0.2 wt%, the paraffin addition was fixed to 0.001 wt%, the process temperature was 80oC and the heat-treatment temperature after evaporation was 900oC. The addition of paraffin reduced the defects in the PC layer, thereby resulting in good crystallinity and transmittance. Our results suggested that paraffin can enhance the bonding force between silica nanopowders.

Three-dimensional metallic photonic crystal is fabricated by self-assembly of gold nanoshells. In order to fabricate highly ordered crystal structure, fabrication parameters such as silica coating thickness, the zeta potential and the concentration of gold nanoshells are carefully controlled and optimized. Highly ordered gold nanoshell opal is fabricated and its structural and optical properties are presented.

AbstractWe report a new method of Thin Crystal Film deposition. In the present paper we describe the method of crystallization, structure, and optical properties of Bisbenzimidazo[2,1-a:1',2',b']anthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d'e'f']-diisoquinoline-6,9-dion (mixture with cis-isomer) (abbreviated DBI PTCA) sulfonation product. The Thin Crystal Film has a thickness of 200-1000 nm, with anisotropic optical properties such as refraction and absorption indices. X-ray diffraction data evidences a lyotropic liquid crystalline state in liquid phase and crystalline state in solid film. Anisotropic optical properties of the film make it useful in optical devices, e.g. liquid crystal displays.
