We present details of a model for calculating the mass spectrum of light-quark mesons and decay constants of the pseudoscalar meson octet from a phenomenological model based on Dyson–Schwinger and Bethe–Salpeter equations. In this model the Bethe-Salpeter kernel is approximated by a separable ansatz obtained from input quark propagators.

Relativistic bosonic field theories in 3+1 dimensions with exact global continuous symmetries and conserved charges Q may admit stable, finite energy, time dependent configurations (Q-balls) as solutions to their equations of motion. Previous work established their existence for both Abelian and non-Abelian symmetries. In the present work we elaborate on some more issues of stability and uniqueness that arise in the SO(3) and SU(3) renormalizable models. We consider the effect of explicit symmetry breaking in the spectrum of the SU(3) model, by identifying its order parameter with the meson octet and by choosing a mass matrix consistent with the Gell-Mann-Okubo mass relation. We demonstrate the existence of “isospin” and “strange” balls whose stability is due to the presence of residual global symmetries which are identified with the exact symmetries of isospin and strangeness of strong interactions.

We report on results about the mass sensitivity of chiral symmetry restoration in the linear sigma model. For masses of the pseudoscalar meson octet which are close to the experimental values, we observed only a gradual change in the order parameters, when the temperature was changed. To estimate the size of the first order transition region around the chiral limit, we have varied the mass input for the tree level parametrization in several ways. The point with realistic meson masses turned out to lie well inside the crossover region.

The s-wave interactions of the baryon decuplet with the octet of pseudoscalar mesons is studied in a unitarized coupled channel approach. We obtain a fair agreement for mass and width of several [Formula: see text] resonances. In particular, the Ξ(1820), the Λ(1520) and the Σ(1670) states are well reproduced. Other resonances are predicted and also the couplings of the observed resonances to the various channels are evaluated.
