Chapter 7 describes how Lorentz agreed to head the Physisch Kabinet of Teylers Foundation in Haarlem, including some background on Teylers, Haarlem, and Lorentz’s activities there. The scholarly as well as personal relationship between Lorentz and Einstein is also discussed, as well as Lorentz’s role in the first Solvay Conseil de Physique and the Solvay Institute and the search for Lorentz’s successor in Leiden; in particular, the attempts to interest Albert Einstein. Once Einstein had refused, Lorentz approached the Austrian physicist Paul Ehrenfest, whose appointment is described in detail. In 1912, Lorentz moved to Haarlem, while he continued to lecture in Leiden and attend to his national and international contacts. Eherenfest’s succession was successful, but mood swings and a sense of inadequacy increasingly made it impossible for him to withstand the professional pressures, and eventually he committed suicide in 1933.

Die Geschichte des sackförmigen oder fusiformen Aneurysmas reicht in die Zeit der alten Ägypter, Byzantiner und Griechen zurück. Vesal 1557 und Harvey 1628 führten den Begriff in die moderne Medizin ein, indem sie bei je einem Patienten einen pulsierenden Tumor intra vitam feststellten und post mortem verifizierten. Weitere Eckpfeiler bildeten die Monographien von Lancisi und Scarpa im 18. bzw. beginnenden 19. Jahrhundert. Die erste wirksame Therapie bestand in der Kompression des Aneurysmasacks von außen, die zweite in der Arterienligatur, der John Hunter 1785 zum Durchbruch verhalf. Endoaneurysmoraphie (Matas) und Umhüllung mit Folien wurden breit angewendet, bevor Ultraschalldiagnostik und Bypass-Chirurgie Routineverfahren wurden und die Prognose dramatisch verbesserten. Die diagnostischen und therapeutischen Probleme in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts werden anhand von zwei prominenten Patienten dargestellt, Albert Einstein und Thomas Mann, die beide im Jahr 1955 an einer Aneurysmaruptur verstarben.

Agama merupakan hal yang penting karena bisa menjadi landasan moral dalam berpolitik. “Ilmu pengetahuan tanpa agama akan menjadi buta, sedangkan agama tanpa ilmu pengetahuan hanya akan menjadi lumpuh,” kata Albert Einstein. Dunia politik pasti menggunakan ilmu pengetahuan yang sangat mendalam. Jika dikaitkan dengan pernyataan Einstein, berpolitik tanpa agama akan menjadi buta. Agama merupakan hal yang penting karena bisa menjadi landasan moral dalam berpolitik. Karena setiap agama selalu mengajarkan nilai-nilai kebaikan dalam setiap kehidupan. Nilai-nilai kebaikan inilah yang dapat diambil sebagai landasan moral dalam berpolitik. Agama tanpa ilmu pengetahuan hanya akan menjadi lumpuh. Jika kita ingin terjun ke dunia politik dengan hanya mengerti tentang agama saja kita tidak akan mampu dalam mengambil langkah dan tindakan.

Background Mental health tends to worsen over the course of medical school, with steep declines in well-being in students’ clerkship year (M3). Positive emotion promotes adaptive coping to stress and may help preserve medical student well-being. Objective This study describes the development of LAVENDER (Leveraging Affect and Valuing Empathy for Nurturing Doctors’ Emotional Resilience), a program aimed at increasing positive emotion to preserve well-being in medical students. Methods We conducted a single-arm pilot of LAVENDER, a positive psychology intervention developed for medical students delivered in an interactive classroom format to a cohort of 157 third-year medical students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Our primary outcome was the acceptability of LAVENDER. We also examined preliminary efficacy using measures of emotion, stress and burnout collected at each intervention session. Results LAVENDER showed good acceptability: 76% of participants agreed that the LAVENDER skills were useful and 72% agreed that they would recommend the LAVENDER program to others. Qualitative feedback suggested that medical students enjoyed the program and found the skills to be useful for coping with stress, but also reported the following barriers to engagement: lack of time to practice the skills, resistance to the mandatory nature of the wellness sessions, and difficulty integrating the skills in daily life. We did not find support for the preliminary efficacy of LAVENDER for improving medical student well-being in students’ clerkship year. Participants showed decreases in positive emotion and increases in symptoms of burnout over the intervention period ( ps < .01). Conclusion The current paper describes the development and a single-arm pilot test of LAVENDER, a positive psychology program tailored for medical students. Although we found preliminary evidence for the acceptability of LAVENDER, we did not find support for the preliminary efficacy. Lessons learned and next steps for the program are discussed.
