We present a facile one-pot synthesis to prepare ternaryZnxCd1-xSe(x= 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, and 1) nanocrystals (NCs) with high emission quantum yield (QY, 45~89%). The effect of Zn content (x) ofZnxCd1-xSeNCs on their physical properties is investigated. The NCs have a particle size of 3.2 nm and face centered cubic structure. However, the actual compositions of the NCs are Zn0.03Cd0.97Se, Zn0.11Cd0.89Se, and Zn0.38Cd0.62Se when Zn content is 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8, respectively. In terms of the optical properties, the emission wavelength shifts from 512 to 545 nm with increasing Zn content from 0 to 0.8 while the QY changes from 89 to 45, respectively. Partial replacement of Cd by Zn is beneficial to improve the QY of Zn0.2and Zn0.5NCs. The optical properties of ternary NCs are affected by compositional effect rather than particle size effect.

Near-infrared (NIR)-absorbing nanoparticles synthesized by the reduction of tetrachloroauric acid (HAuCl4) using sodium sulfide (Na2S) exhibited absorption bands at ∼530 nm and at the NIR region of 650−1100 nm. A detailed study on the structure and microstructure of as-synthesized nanoparticles was reported previously. The as-synthesized nanoparticles were found to consist of amorphous AuxS (x = ∼2), mostly well mixed within crystalline Au. In this work, the optical properties were tailored by varying the precursor molar ratios of HAuCl4 and Na2S. In addition, a detailed study of composition and particle-size effects on the optical properties was discussed. The change of polarizability by the introduction of S in the form of AuxS (x = ∼2) had a significant effect on NIR absorption. Also, it was found in this work that exposure of these particles to NIR irradiation using a Nd:YAG laser resulted in loss of the NIR absorption band. Thermal effects generated during NIR irradiation had led to microstructural changes that modified the optical properties of particles.

Abstract. As part of the international project entitled "African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA)", NAMMA (NASA AMMA) aimed to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the African Easterly Waves (AEWs), the Sahara Air Layer (SAL), and tropical cyclogenesis. The NAMMA airborne field campaign was based out of the Cape Verde Islands during the peak of the hurricane season, i.e., August and September 2006. Multiple Sahara dust layers were sampled during 62 encounters in the eastern portion of the hurricane main development region, covering both the eastern North Atlantic Ocean and the western Saharan desert (i.e., 5–22° N and 10–35° W). The centers of these layers were located at altitudes between 1.5 and 3.3 km and the layer thickness ranged from 0.5 to 3 km. Detailed dust microphysical and optical properties were characterized using a suite of in-situ instruments aboard the NASA DC-8 that included a particle counter, an Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer, an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer, a nephelometer, and a Particle Soot Absorption Photometer. The NAAMA sampling inlet has a size cut (i.e., 50% transmission efficiency size) of approximately 4 μm in diameter for dust particles, which limits the representativeness of the NAMMA observational findings. The NAMMA dust observations showed relatively low particle number densities, ranging from 268 to 461 cm−3, but highly elevated volume density with an average at 45 μm3 cm−3. NAMMA dust particle size distributions can be well represented by tri-modal lognormal regressions. The estimated volume median diameter (VMD) is averaged at 2.1 μm with a small range of variation regardless of the vertical and geographical sampling locations. The Ångström Exponent assessments exhibited strong wavelength dependence for absorption but a weak one for scattering. The single scattering albedo was estimated at 0.97 ± 0.02. The imaginary part of the refractive index for Sahara dust was estimated at 0.0022, with a range from 0.0015 to 0.0044. Closure analysis showed that observed scattering coefficients are highly correlated with those calculated from spherical Mie-Theory and observed dust particle size distributions. These values are generally consistent with literature values reported from studies with similar particle sampling size range.

AbstractOne-dimensional metallic nanostructures such as nanorods and nanowires are of tremendous interest for electronic, sensing, and catalytic applications. Shape anisotropy introduces new optical properties in gold and silver nanoparticles, such as longitudinal plasmon resonance bands in the visible and near-IR portion of the spectrum. Different approaches employed for the shape-controlled synthesis of silver and gold nanocrystals include chemical, electrochemical, and physical methods. The chemical route for the synthesis of nanorods and nanowires, in which metal salts are reduced in an aqueous solution, is one of the most widely used methods. This route commonly employs a surfactant as the directing agent to introduce asymmetry in the nanocrystal shape. Variation in the concentration of precursor salt and the surfactant, the nature of the surfactant, the nature and concentration of reducing agents, the presence of external salts, and the pH of the reaction solution all affect nanocrystal shape, dimension, and yield. The size and shape of the nanocrystals affect the position of the plasmon bands, which in turn has been widely used in surface-enhanced spectroscopies that include both Raman and fluorescence. The aqueous, surfactant-directed route also promises the synthesis of more complex nanostructures with additional desirable properties.

Abstract. Microwave remote sensing is important for observing the mass of ice hydrometeors. One of the main error sources of microwave ice mass retrievals is that approximations around the shape of the particles are unavoidable. One common approach to represent particles of irregular shape is the soft particle approximation (SPA). We show that it is possible to define a SPA that mimics mean optical particles of available reference data over narrow frequency ranges, considering a single observation technique at the time, but SPA does not work in a broader context. Most critically, the required air fraction varies with frequency and application, as well as with particle size. In addition, the air fraction matching established density parameterisations results in far too soft particles, at least for frequencies above 90 GHz. That is, alternatives to SPA must be found. One alternative was recently presented by Geer and Baordo (2014). They used a sub-set of the same reference data and simply selected as "shape model" the particle type giving the best overall agreement with observations. We present a way to perform the same selection of a representative particle shape, but without involving assumptions on particle size distribution and actual ice mass contents. Only an assumption on the occurrence frequency of different particle shapes is still required. Our analysis leads to the same selection of representative shape as found by Geer and Baordo (2014). In addition, we show that the selected particle shape has the desired properties also at higher frequencies as well as for radar applications. Finally, we demonstrate that in this context the assumption on particle shape is likely less critical when using mass equivalent diameter to characterise particle size, compared to using maximum dimension, but a better understanding of the variability of size distributions is required to fully characterise the advantage. Further advancements on these subjects are presently difficult to achieve due to a lack of reference data. One main problem is that most available databases of precalculated optical properties assume completely random particle orientation, while for certain conditions a horizontal alignment is expected. In addition, the only database covering frequencies above 340 GHz has a poor representation of absorption as it is based on outdated refractive index data, as well as only covering particles having a maximum dimension below 2 mm and a single temperature.

<p>In this study, simplified analytic type of expression for size dependent MEs (Mass efficiencies) are developed. The entire size was considered assuming lognormal size distribution for sulfate, nitrate and NaCl aerosol species and the MEE of each aerosol chemical composition was estimated by fitting Mie’s calculation. The obtained results are compared with the results from the Mie-theory-based calculations and showed comparable results.</p><p>The mass efficiencies of all aerosol components for each size range are compared with Mie’s results and approximated as a function of geometric mean diameter in the form of a power law formula. Finally, harmonic mean type approximation was used to cover entire particle size range.</p><p>Also, analytic expression of approximated scattering enhancement factor which stands for the effect of hygroscopic growth factor for polydispersed aerosol on aerosol optical properties are obtained.</p><p>Based on aerosol thermodynamic models, mass growth factor can be obtained and their optical properties can be obtained by using Mie theory with different aerosol properties and size distribution. Finally, scattering enhancement factor was approximated fRH for polydispersed aerosol as a function of RH.</p><p>Finally, we also compared the simple forcing efficiency (SFE, W/g) of polydisperse aerosols between the developed simple approach and by the method using the Mie theory. The results show that current obtained approximated methods are comparable with existing numercal calculation based results for polydipersed particle size.</p>
