Abstract We describe the appearance of a free-radical signal in the ESR spectrum of normal human serum incubated with several complement activating agents. The intensity of this signal is dependent of dose of activating agents, time and temperature. Signals elicited by different complement activators differ in morphology and kinetics. Inhibition by treatment with EDTA and the presence of the signal in activated C 6-deficient rabbit serum suggest that the con-vertase forming steps of complement activation (C2 to 5) could be the source of free-radical containing molecules.

Temperature dependences of the ESR spectrum in Y 2 Cu 2 O 5 compound are studied for both polycrystalline and single crystal samples. The g-factors along the main axes are found to be ga=2.099, gb=2.048, and gc=2.21 at room temperature, T=293 K . As temperature decreases, the linewidth ΔH increases in agreement with the Huber’s formula ΔH=A(T N /(T−T N ))β+B(θ/T+1) with the following parameters: A=1513±10 Oe , B=509±10 Oe , T N =7±1 K , θ=18±2 K , β=1.3±0.3. In the vicinity of the Neel Temperature, T N , the ESR spectrum has a very complicated form indicating the existence of clusters with different internal magnetic fields. Below T N , a single line symmetrical ESR spectrum is recovered.

ESR-spectra of the mixed system (1-x) Cr2O3 • x Ga2O3 having a concentration depending Neeltemperature TN are thoroughly investigated. For polycristalline samples with concentrations up to 6% it is shown that the line shape of the absorption curves has Lorentzian character in the whole temperature range. Within a mean variation of 0,8% and for T>TN, the temperature dependence of the ESR-intensity confirmes the proposed cluster-model. While pure Cr2O3 has a coupling energy of ΔE = 430 cm-1, this value reduces slowly by the incorporation of Ga3+-ions. At a concentration of x = 6% the reduction amounts to about 9%. As all spins exhibit a uniform behaviour, one evidently can calculate the exchange constant J12 for nearest neighbours interaction even in the Gallium-doped crystal
