Abstract Population densities of the 4p and 5p levels of argon atoms were measured along a freejet centerline of partially ionized argon in a low density plasma wind tunnel. The measured axial distribution of the 4p[3/2] level population has been compared with a theoretical prediction using a modified Thomson's formula for the excitation cross sections.
