The numerical simulation of shelled Comp.B explosive was studied following the Lee-Tarver ignition and growth model when it was impacted respectively by 4340 Steel, OFHC and 93#W projectile with the same mass; the influences on explosive detonation of the initiation process, the material of projectile and the L/D ratio of projectile were analyzed; the critical initiation speeds of the projectiles of three different materials with different L/D ratio were gained. In order to verify the simulation results, the questions were calculated by the theoretical simplified model, the results of the theoretical calculation and the numerical simulation accorded well based on critical energy criterion. The results show that the capability of igniting explosive, the first is 93#W, the second is OFHC, the last is 4340 Steel; The initiation point were not on the interface of shell and explosive, and the faster of the impacting velocity, the initiation point closer the interface; the bigger of the L/D ratio of projectile, the higher of the critical initiation speed.

In order to make the process of fragmentation of warhead cases more systematic, we have developed a procedure that makes use of nonlinear optimization to derive optimal values for case design parameters subject to various design constraints. A framework has been developed that makes use of the optimization software package LS-OPT driving the hydrocode CTH (CTH is developed and maintained at Sandia National Laboratories, LS-OPT is commercially available from Livermore Software Technology Corp.). CTH was used to model the explosive detonation and determine the resultant kinetic energy delivered to the case by the energetic material. As an example of application of the framework, a test problem was run using a case configuration consisting alternating titanium alloy and polymer layers.

Dynamic elastic strain in ~1.8 and 1.0 m diameter containment vessels containing a high explosive detonation was measured using an array of fiber Bragg gratings. The all-optical method, called real-time localized strain measurement, recorded the strain for 10 ms after detonation with additional measurements being sequentially made at a rate of 1.7 MHz. A swept wavelength laser source provided the repetition rate necessary for such high-speed measurements while also providing enough signal strength and bandwidth to simultaneously measure 8 or more unique points on the vessel’s surface. The data presented here arethen compared with additional diagnostics consisting of a fast spectral interferometer and an optical backscatter reflectometer to show a comparison between the local and global changes in the vessel strain, both dynamically and statically to further characterize the performance of the localized strain measurement. The results are also compared with electrical resistive strain gauges and finite element analysis simulations.
