The linear thermal expansion coefficient a from 2 to 100 K and heat capacity per gram cp from 0�3 to 30 K are reported for fully-stabilized zirconia containing a nominal 16 wt.% (9 mol.%) of yttria. The heat capacity below 7 K has been analysed into a linear (tunnelling?) term, a Schottky term centred at 1�2 K, a Debye term (e~ = 540 K), and a small T5 contribution. The expansion coefficient is roughly proportional to T from 5 to 20 K and gives a limiting lattice Griineisen parameter 'Yo ::::: 5, which agrees with that calculated from elastic data.

The thermal conductivity of Ni 2 + doped KMgF 3 in a magnetic field at low temperatures: the effect of single ions and coupled pairs

The thermal conductivity between 0.4 and 4.2 K and in magnetic fields up to 50 kOe of KMgF 3 doped with Ni 2+ has been measured. The results are analysed to give values of the average spin-lattice coupling constants ( x Sl ) for the Ni 2+ ion. These are in agreement with values calculated using the magneto-elastic constants (GX1 and 6r44) derived from acoustic paramagnetic resonance (a.p.r.) experiments. Below IK the thermal resistivity as a function of magnetic field shows a number of anomalies, for which possible causes are discussed; it is concluded that they result from phonon interactions with exchange-coupled pairs of Ni 2+ ions. Such pairs are also observed in a.p.r. experiments.

AbstractThe existence of Majorana quasiparticles was predicted in the edge state in topological insulators, especially in the p-wave superfluid medium $${^3}$$ 3 He-B. Due to its purity and coherent quantum state, $${^3}$$ 3 He-B is an ideal platform for searching for Majorana fermions in condensed matter systems. In the limit of extremely low temperatures, the density of Bogolyubov quasiparticles and the heat capacity of $${^3}$$ 3 He-B decrease exponentially. In this article, we present the first observation of the deviation of its heat capacity from exponential dependence in the limit of record low cooling. We found an additional heat capacity that more than doubled the heat capacity of bulk $${^3}$$ 3 He-B and changes as T$$^2$$ 2 . The additional heat capacity is in good agreement with the predicted heat capacity of 2D gas of Majorana. This observation is a direct proof of the existence of Majorana quasiparticles in $${^3}$$ 3 He-B.
