Abstract We perform a careful study of the infrared sector of massless non-abelian gauge theories in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime using the covariant phase space formalism, taking into account the boundary contributions arising from the gauge sector of the theory. Upon quantization, we show that the boundary contributions lead to an infinite degeneracy of the vacua. The Hilbert space of the vacuum sector is not only shown to be remarkably simple, but also universal. We derive a Ward identity that relates the n-point amplitude between two generic in- and out-vacuum states to the one computed in standard QFT. In addition, we demonstrate that the familiar single soft gluon theorem and multiple consecutive soft gluon theorem are consequences of the Ward identity.

The Impact

An extension of the Standard Model (SM) is studied, in which two new vector bosons are introduced, a first boson Z' coupled to the SM by the usual minimal coupling, producing an enlarged gauge sector in the SM. The second boson A' field, in the dark sector of the model, remains massless and originates a dark photon γ'. A hybrid mixing scenario is considered based on a combined Higgs and Stueckelberg mechanisms. In a Compton-like process, a photon scattered by a weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) is converted into a dark photon. This process is studied, in an astrophysical application obtaining an estimate of the impact on stellar cooling of white dwarfs and neutron stars.

Remarkable Relation

In 1849 Stokes published a remarkable relation between the form of the geoid and the values of gravity. He neglected terms involving the square of the ellipticity. The validity of his expression for the external potential has been doubted by some later writers, particularly for purposes of a higher approximation. Sir George Darwin, ignoring the departure of the geoid from spheroidal form, derived expressions for the internal and external potentials of the earth, keeping terms of the order of the square of the ellipticity. He justified his results for the region between two spheres concentric with the earth of radii equal to the earth’s minimum and maximum radii. But again some doubted the validity of his expressions for this very region. In the present paper the external potential is derived directly (§§ 1-13) from an extension of a theorem due to Green, without any assumption as to its form. The expression includes terms involving the square of the ellipticity and also the higher harmonics representing the departure of the geoid from a spheroid; but products of these departures and the ellipticity are neglected.

We review recent theoretical progress in the computation of radiative corrections beyond one loop within the standard model of electroweak interactions, in both the gauge and Higgs sectors. In the gauge sector, we discuss universal corrections of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], and those due to virtual [Formula: see text]-threshold effects, as well as specific corrections to [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] including finite-mb effects. We also present an update of the hadronic contributions to Δα. Theoretical uncertainties, other than those due to the lack of knowledge of MH and mt, are estimated. In the Higgs sector, we report on the [Formula: see text] corrections to [Formula: see text] including those which are specific for the [Formula: see text] mode, the [Formula: see text] corrections to [Formula: see text] including the finite-mq terms, and the [Formula: see text] corrections to Γ(H → gg).
