Abstract Triple-wire gas indirect arc welding (TW-GIA) has the advantages of low heat input and high deposition rate. However, the simultaneous melting of triple wires makes the metal transfer mode complicated. The unknown of the metal transfer mode restricts the development of this technology. In this paper, high-speed camera systems and electrical signal acquisition sensors were used to explore the TW-GIA metal transfer mode. The static force model and the arc conductive channel model were used to discuss the droplet force and energy conversion characteristics respectively. Results showed that the TW-GIA metal transfer modes can be divided into: short-circuit transfer (SCT), main wire projected transfer + side wire globular transfer (PGT), main wire streaming transfer + side wire projected transfer (SPT) and main wire streaming transfer + side wire streaming transfer (SST). Moreover, the process parameter ranges corresponding to the four modes were summarized. Due to the stable arc and the uniform metal transfer process, SPT and SST can form desirable weld seam. The gravity and z-axis components of electromagnetic force are the main forces that promote metal transfer. The x-axis and y-axis components of the electromagnetic force deviate the metal transfer path from the arc coverage. Due to the change of arc conductive channel, the energy transferred from TW-GIA to the base metal is less than that of GMAW, showing the advantages of small welding deformation, narrow heat affected zone and grain refinement.

The electromagnetic model of a large-bloom continuous casting was established to simulate the magnetic field. The model 3600 digital, high-precision, three-dimensional Gaussian meter was used to measure the internal magnetic field of mold electromagnetic stirring (M-EMS). The distribution of simulated magnetic field was basically consistent with that of the measured magnetic field; the accuracy of electromagnetic stirring model was verified. With the increase of current frequency, the electromagnetic force first increases and then decreases; when the current frequency is 9 Hz, the electromagnetic force reaches its maximum value. A bipolar electromagnetic stirring model is proposed; the influence of current intensity and distance were investigated. With the increase of current intensity of lower mold electromagnetic stirring (M-EMSB), the internal magnetic intensity of upper mold electromagnetic stirring (M-EMSA) gradually increases, and the middle region is gradually filled by magnetic field. With the increase of the distance, the range of the low-intensity magnetic field expands. When the current intensity of the M-EMSB is 320 A, and the distance is 400 mm, an 8 mT uniform magnetic field in the range of 1.2 m is formed. Compared with the traditional continuous casting electromagnetic agitator, the center equiaxial crystal of bipolar electromagnetic agitator increases from 30.3% to 49.5%.

This article analyzes the dynamic process of groove filling and the resulting weld pool fluid flow in gas metal arc welding of thick metals with V-groove. Filler droplets carrying mass, momentum, thermal energy, and sulfur species are periodically impinged onto the workpiece. The complex transport phenomena in the weld pool, caused by the combined effect of droplet impingement, gravity, electromagnetic force, surface tension, and plasma arc pressure, were investigated to determine the transient weld pool shape and distributions of velocity, temperature, and sulfur species in the weld pool. It was found that the groove provides a channel which can smooth the flow in the weld pool, leading to poor mixing between the filler metal and the base metal, as compared to the case without a groove.
