The crystal structures of the isostructural title compounds poly[(μ-benzene-1,4-dithiolato)dithallium], Tl2(SC6H4S), and poly[(μ-benzene-1,4-diselenolato)dithallium], Tl2(SeC6H4Se), were solved by simulated annealing from high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinements of an initial structure with one formula unit per triclinic cell gave satisfactory agreement with the data, but led to a structure with impossibly close non-bonded contacts. A disordered model was proposed to alleviate this problem, but an alternative supercell structure leads to slightly improved agreement with the data. The isostructural superlattice structures were confirmed for both compounds through additional data collection, with substantially better counting statistics, which revealed the presence of very weak superlattice peaks not previously seen. Overall, each structure contains Tl—S or Tl—Se two-dimensional networks, connected by phenylene bridges. The sulfur (or selenium) coordination sphere around each thallium is a highly distorted square pyramid or a `see-saw' shape, depending upon how many Tl—S or Tl—Se interactions are considered to be bonds. In addition, the two compounds contain pairs of TlI ions that interact through a closed-shell `thallophilic' interaction: in the sulfur compound there are two inequivalent pairs of Tl atoms with Tl—Tl distances of 3.49 and 3.58 Å, while in the selenium compound those Tl—Tl interactions are at 3.54 and 3.63 Å.

Iterative phase retrieval has been used to reconstruct the near-field distribution behind tailored X-ray waveguide arrays, by inversion of the measured far-field pattern recorded under fully coherent conditions. It is thereby shown that multi-waveguide interference can be exploited to control the near-field distribution behind the waveguide exit. This can, for example, serve to create a secondary quasi-focal spot outside the waveguide structure. For this proof of concept, an array of seven planar Ni/C waveguides are used, with precisely varied guiding layer thickness and cladding layer thickness, as fabricated by high-precision magnetron sputtering systems. The controlled thickness variations in the range of 0.2 nm results in a desired phase shift of the different waveguide beams. Two kinds of samples, a one-dimensional waveguide array and periodic waveguide multilayers, were fabricated, each consisting of seven C layers as guiding layers and eight Ni layers as cladding layers. These are shown to yield distinctly different near-field patterns.

The present study is directed to clarify the influence of carbon doping on the degradation of methyl orange. TiO2 nanotubes were prepared by anodizing titanium foils in a two electrode configuration bath with titanium foil as the anode and platinum as the counter electrode. The electrochemical bathconsists of 1 M Na2SO4 with 0.7 g ammonium fluoride, NH4F. The nanotubes obtained were further doped with carbon via in-situ and ex-situ method. Incorporation of carbon on TiO2 via in-situ method is accomplished during the anodization process by introducing oxalic acid into electrolyte while theex-situ doping involves carbon incorporation into pre-fabricated TiO2 nanotube via flame annealing using carbon blackN330. Characterization such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) are used to determine the surfacemorphology, composition of dopants, and phases exists. Well ordered nanotube with good adherence and smooth surface was obtained for both methods. When the oxide was annealed, X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of anatase and rutile phase. The photocatalytic properties of thepure TiO2 and carbon doped TiO2 were tested for methyl orange degradation and the result indicated that the in-situ doped TiO2 has much better degradation than the ex-situ and pure TiO2. The percentage of methyl orange degradation for in-situ was 20% and 41% higher than ex-situ doped TiO2 and pure TiO2, respectively.
