<p>Metallic zinc coatings are well established as cost-effective corrosion protection for steel bridges. The zinc coating acts first as barrier protection, isolating the base steel from corrosive elements, and secondly by cathodic protection, acting as a sacrificial anode to protect the steel should the coating be compromised. Bridge operators can be confronted by disproportional high maintenance costs for bridges in use as removal of (in)organic paint systems with hazardous and toxic compounds require expensive waste disposal and environmental protection measures. Metallic zinc coatings are recognized as environmentally friendly, sustainable, and low maintenance, providing the lowest life cycle cost corrosion protection. Various case studies with bridges protected with metallic zinc coatings in and outside Europe are illustrated.</p>

Elongated wire-like Zinc oxide, nanocombs and nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized on the silicon substrate from the metallic zinc as a starting material. The annealing temperature was as low as 450 ºC in argon atmosphere mixed with about 3% oxygen. Structural analysis using the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) showed that the existence of two phases; nanowires and crystalline form. Moreover some nanoparticles aggregates were noticed to be attached in the bulk to the sides of the ZnO nanocrystals and sometimes these aggregate attached to the Zinc oxide hexagonal crystal and grow to form nanowire at different angles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations for the zinc oxide nanostructure on the silicon substrate showed the formation of the nanocrystals in the gas flow direction and at the low energy sites over the silicon substrate. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements, performed at the room temperature, showed the existence of two basic emissions: narrow ultraviolet (UV) emission at 398 nm which attributed to the near band edge emission of the wide band gap and a very wide, more intensive, green emission at 471 nm corresponds to the crystal defects such as vacancies, interstitial sites in ZnO.

Acetylated compounds prepared from naphthoquinones have been reported as antitumoral prodrugs. Exploring the synthetic versatility of the naphthoquinone and triazolic nuclei, herein we report a simple and efficient synthetic route to prepare a series of sixteen prodrugs prototype of 1,2,3-triazoles-naphthoquinodoic acetyl derivatives. The compounds 10a-10h and 11a-11h were obtained by oxidative cycloaddition reaction between lawsone and 4-vinyl-1H-1,2,3-triazoles promoted by ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) in alkaline medium followed by reductive acetylation of the quinones in excess of metallic zinc and acetic anhydride in yields up to > 98%. All derivatives revealed to be hemocompatible and the compound 11e exhibited the most promising profile against Caco-2 cells showing the higher selectivity index. Molecular docking suggests that these compounds could exert their cytotoxic activity through inhibition of one topoisomerase II isoform, at least.

Abstract The zinc deposition reaction onto metallic zinc has been investigated at the single particle level through the electrode-particle collision method in neutral solutions, and in respect of its dependence on the applied potential and the ionic strength of a sulphate-containing solution. Depending on the concentration of sulphate ions in solution, different amounts of metallic zinc were deposited on the single Zn nanoparticles. Specifically, insights into the electron transfer kinetics at the single particles were obtained, indicating an electrically early reactant-like transition state, which is consistent with the rate-determining partial de-hydration/de-complexation process. Such information on the reaction kinetics at the nanoscale is of vital importance for the development of more efficient and long-lasting nanostructured Zn-based negative electrodes for Zn-ion battery applications.
