AbstractMagneto-induced optical second harmonic generation (MSHG) is used to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co-Cu granular films. Azimuthal anisotropy of the SHG response reveals an existence of the regular structure of Co nanocrystals. The nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect (NOMOKE) is observed for the longitudinal and transverse configurations. The coherence of the SH responses from the nonmagnetic and magnetic subsystems of the Co-Cu granular films is demonstrated by the MSHG phase measurements (the MSHG interferometry).

ABSTRACTNonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect in Gd-containing Langmuir-Blodgett superstructures is studied by second harmonic generation (SHG) interferometry. The intensity of the regular magneto-induced second harmonic (SH) is found to be by a factor of about 2 larger than the intensity of the regular SH component of a non-magnetic origin. The phase shift between the magneto-induced and non-magnetic contributions to the nonlinear polarization is about 46° The intensity of the magnetization-independent hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) is by two orders larger than that of mnagneto-induced HRS.

ABSTRACTIn this paper the results of our recent studies of the magnetization-induced nonlinear optical second-order and third-order effects in magnetophotonic crystals and magnetophotonic microcavities are surveyed.Nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect (NOMOKE) both in magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation (MSHG) and magnetization-induced third-harmonic generation (MTHG) is observed in garnet MMC at wavelengths of the resonant microcavity modes. Magnetization-induced variations of MSHG and MTHG intensity as well as magnetization-induced shift of phase and rotation of polarization of second-harmonic and third-harmonic waves are observed in proper - transversal, longitudinal or polar - NOMOKE configurations.Nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect in MSHG intensity is observed in garnet magnetophotonic crystals in the spectral range of photonic band gap (PBG) edges of MPC.The MSHG intensity reveals enhancement by a factor of more than 102 if the fundamental wavelength is tuned in the vicinity of the PBG edge. This enhancement is attributed to the fulfilment of the phase matching conditions for MSHG effect in layered structures with periodic modulation of both optical (magneto-optical) and nonlinear optical parameters.

In this paper, based on 4×4 matrix method, we present theoretical calculations of the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect for Co/Pt and MnBi multilayered films, and NixSiO2(1-x) granular films. The calculated results indicate that, (1) the simulated Kerr spectra as a function of photo-energy are in good agreement with experimental ones; (2) the maxima and the periodical and damped oscillation appear in the Kerr spectra curve with the magnetic thickness, which is important for design of the material in the future; (3) the structure of interfacial layer affect greatly the Kerr spectra, which is significant for the processing of magneto-optical material.

AbstractMagnetization induced second harmonic generation (MSHG) is observed in Gd-containing Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The nonlinear optical studies reveal significant alterations in the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity and in the polarization and phase of the second harmonic (SH) wave induced by application of DC magnetic field. The violation of polarization selection rules and the diffusenes of the MSHG intensity indicates the inhomogeneity of LB structure and the hyper-Rayleigh scattering mechanism of MSHG. The latter proofs the existence of 2D-islands of Gd ions in the structural unit of the LB films which is composed by monolayer of rare-earth ions compressed between two layers of stearic acid molecules.
