Carbon nanotubes have a host of properties that make them excellent candidates for electron emitters. A significant amount of research has been conducted on nanotube-based field-emitters over the past two decades, and they have been investigated for devices ranging from flat-panel displays to vacuum tubes and electron microscopes. Other electron emission mechanisms from carbon nanotubes, such as photoemission, secondary emission, and thermionic emission, have also been studied, although to a lesser degree than field-emission. This paper presents an overview of the topic, with emphasis on these less-explored mechanisms, although field-emission is also discussed. We will see that not only is electron emission from nanotubes promising for electron-source applications, but also its study could reveal unusual phenomena and open the door to new devices that are not directly related to electron beams.

The favorable electron optical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been studied in detail, but the application to electron sources has been limited by the complexity of the fabrication process. We report the use of Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) for the direct deposition of multi-walled CNTs onto the apex of sharply etched tungsten tips, aligned to the vertical axis of the tips. We show that these emitters have excellent stability.

Carbon nanotubes, nanometer-diameter tubes made of carbon atoms, have garnered significant attention from researchers over the past 15 years due to their outstanding properties such as excellent electronic transport characteristics and mechanical strength. Because of their ability to carry extremely high current densities, their high aspect ratio, and small tip radius that enhances an external electric field greatly, one particularly promising area of interest has been the usage of nanotubes as electron sources. In this article we will try to provide an overview of the subject from various experimental and theoretical angles.
