Dual-wavelength optical switching in a polarization-maintaining fiber is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the group velocity dispersion, generally considered to be a disadvantage, can be exploited to achieve complete switching for any pair of signal and control pulse durations. In addition, group velocity dispersion ensures the broadband operation of the modulator/switch. Experimentally, complete switching of 2 ps-30 ps signal pulses in the wavelength range 0.85 µm–0.95 µm is demonstrated using 50-ps control pulses at 1.053 µm. The effectiveness of the device for pulse compression, pedestal removing and suppression of interpulse radiation is also demonstrated.
