The armature trigger position of multi-stage electromagnetic coil gun has great influence on the exit velocity of projectile. The energy conversion efficiency of the coil gun can be improved effectively if the armature is triggered in the optimum position. So it is important to detect the projectile position in time. Several typical electrical and optical methods for position detection are summarized in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are analyzed and evaluated. And a new laser scattering measurement method is proposed. Results show that optical detection method is simple and easy to implement, but it is susceptible to environmental impacts.

This review article describes a list of most common techniques of soot measurement, particularly for in-cylinder diesel engine soot. The techniques presented in this paper are Laser Induced Incandescence (LII), Light/Laser Extinction Measurement (LEM), Light/Laser Scattering Measurement (LSM), Emission Tomographic (ET) and Thermophoretic Sampling. All techniques are briefly elaborated and their principles of operation, as well as their applications and current issues, are covered. It is commonly acknowledged that non-invasive techniques feature some advantages and are more preferable compared to invasive techniques. Besides, more modern technique such as ET is said to be most widely applied in the future due to its high level of accuracy. However, there are possibilities that both invasive and non-invasive methods can complement each other to obtain more accurate soot measurements.

Particle size development of monodispersed mesoporous silica spheres (MMSS) was investigated by laser scattering measurement, TEM and XRD in situ. Smaller particles suddenly appeared after the commencement of the experiment, then growing homogeneously to larger particles. It is assumed that residual silica precursors in solution preferentially reacted with existing particle surface silanol, preventing generation of new particles. This leads to the formation of monodispersed particles. Based on the mechanism, monodispersed mesoporous silica spheres with core/shell structure have been newly synthesized.
