Since aircraft weakly-rigid structure has large size and weak stiffness, there has serious deformation during assembly process. The current deformation analysis theory of rigid assembly is not applicable. Based on the N-2-1 (N > 3) locating principle, this paper presents a methodology for weakly-rigid parts. An optimization algorithm combines finite element analysis and nonlinear programming methods to find the optimal number and position of the locating points in order to minimize the assembly deformation. An example application study is presented to demonstrate the optimization procedure and its effectiveness by using the software of ABAQUS.

In graph theory, spanning trees connect all the vertices together using minimum number of edges. A topological optimization method of compliant mechanisms is presented based on spanning tree theory. A valid topology is regarded as a network connecting input, output, support and intermediate nodes, which contains at least one spanning tree among the introduced nodes. Invalid disconnected topologies can be weeded out if no spanning tree is included. No further deformation analysis and performance evaluation is needed for invalid disconnected topologies. Problem-dependent objectives are optimized for topological optimization of compliant mechanisms. Constraints about maximum input displacement and input force, maximum stress and overlapping connections are directly imposed during the optimization process. The discrete optimization problem is solved by genetic algorithm with penalty function handling constraints. An example is presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimization procedure.

AbstractThe paper presents a new multi-material topology optimization method with a novel adjoint sensitivity analysis that can accommodate not only multiple plasticity but also multiple hardening models for individual materials in composite structures. Based on the proposed method, an integrated framework is developed which details the nonlinear finite element analysis, sensitivity analysis and optimization procedure. The proposed method and framework are implemented and illustrated by three numerical examples presented in this paper. An in-depth analysis of the numerical results has revealed the significant impact of the selection of plasticity and hardening model on the results of topology.

Coronary stent design affects the spatial distribution of wall shear stress (WSS), which can influence the progression of endothelialization, neointimal hyperplasia, and restenosis. Previous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies have only examined a small number of possible geometries to identify stent designs that reduce alterations in near-wall hemodynamics. Based on a previously described framework for optimizing cardiovascular geometries, we developed a methodology that couples CFD and three-dimensional shape-optimization for use in stent design. The optimization procedure was fully-automated, such that solid model construction, anisotropic mesh generation, CFD simulation, and WSS quantification did not require user intervention. We applied the method to determine the optimal number of circumferentially repeating stent cells (NC) for slotted-tube stents with various diameters and intrastrut areas. Optimal stent designs were defined as those minimizing the area of low intrastrut time-averaged WSS. Interestingly, we determined that the optimal value of NC was dependent on the intrastrut angle with respect to the primary flow direction. Further investigation indicated that stent designs with an intrastrut angle of approximately 40 deg minimized the area of low time-averaged WSS regardless of vessel size or intrastrut area. Future application of this optimization method to commercially available stent designs may lead to stents with superior hemodynamic performance and the potential for improved clinical outcomes.

Capacities of the largest new recovery boilers are steadily rising, and there is every reason to expect this trend to continue. However, the furnace designs for these large boilers have not been optimized and, in general, are based on semiheuristic rules and experience with smaller boilers. We present a multiobjective optimization code suitable for diverse optimization tasks and use it to dimension a high-capacity recovery boiler furnace. The objective was to find the furnace dimensions (width, depth, and height) that optimize eight performance criteria while satisfying additional inequality constraints. The optimization procedure was carried out in a fully automatic manner by means of the code, which is based on a genetic algorithm optimization method and a radial basis function network surrogate model. The code was coupled with a recovery boiler furnace computational fluid dynamics model that was used to obtain performance information on the individual furnace designs considered. The optimization code found numerous furnace geometries that deliver better performance than the base design, which was taken as a starting point. We propose one of these as a better design for the high-capacity recovery boiler. In particular, the proposed design reduces the number of liquor particles landing on the walls by 37%, the average carbon monoxide (CO) content at nose level by 81%, and the regions of high CO content at nose level by 78% from the values obtained with the base design. We show that optimizing the furnace design can significantly improve recovery boiler performance.

Energy harvesting from ambient vibration through piezoelectric devices has received a lot of attention in recent years from both academia and industry. One of the main challenges is to develop devices capable of adapting to diverse sources of environmental excitation, being able to efficiently operate over a broadband frequency spectrum. This work proposes a novel multimodal design of a piezoelectric energy harvesting system to harness energy from a wideband ambient vibration source. Circular-shaped and pizza-shaped designs are employed as candidates for the device, comparing their performance with classical beam-shaped devices. Finite element analysis is employed to model system dynamics using ANSYS Workbench. An optimization procedure is applied to the system aiming to seek a configuration that can extract energy from a broader frequency spectrum and maximize its output power. A comparative analysis with conventional energy harvesting systems is performed. Numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the harvester performances under harmonic and random excitations. Results show that the proposed multimodal harvester has potential to harness energy from broadband ambient vibration sources presenting performance advantages in comparison to conventional single-mode energy harvesters.

This paper discuses a new topology optimization method using frame elements for the design of mechanical structures at the conceptual design phase. The optimal configurations are determined by maximizing multiple eigen-frequencies in order to obtain the most stable structures for dynamic problems. The optimization problem is formulated using frame elements having ellipsoidal cross-sections, as the simplest case. Construction of the optimization procedure is based on CONLIN and the complementary strain energy concept. Finally, several examples are presented to confirm that the proposed method is useful for the topology optimization method discussed here.

This paper presents two nose cones models and their numerical calculation of aerodynamic noise in high speed airflow field combining the analysis theory of fluid dynamics with the acoustic boundary element analysis method. The noise sound pressure levels (SPL) of these two models are calculated under the different speed airflow. And we compare the SPL of the better model with that of commercial nose cone models. These simulated results show that the aerodynamic noise of the nose cone with a ellipsoid head has lower flow-induced noise than that of commercial nose cone models at relative high air flow velocities at most frequencies.

Firstly, a two-level optimization procedure for composite structure is investigated with lamination parameters as design variables and MSC.Nastran as analysis tool. The details using lamination parameters as MSC.Nastran input parameters are presented. Secondly, with a proper equivalent stiffness laminate built to substitute for the lamination parameters, a two-level optimization method based on the equivalent stiffness laminate is proposed. Compared with the lamination parameters-based method, the layer thicknesses of the equivalent stiffness laminate are adopted as continuous design variables at the first level. The corresponding lamination parameters are calculated from the optimal layer thicknesses. At the second level, genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to identify an optimal laminate configuration to target the lamination parameters obtained. The numerical example shows that the proposed method without considering constraints of lamination parameters can obtain better optimal results.

Abstract Soft electrothermal actuators have drawn extensive attention in recent years for their promising applications in biomimetic and biomedical areas. Most soft electrothermal actuators reported so far demonstrated uniform bending deformation, due to the deposition based fabrication of the conductive heater layer from nanomaterial-based solutions, which generally provides uniform heating capacity and uniform bending deformation. In this paper, a soft electrothermal actuator that can provide twisting deformation was designed and fabricated. A metallic microfilament heater of the soft twisting actuator was directly printed using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing, and embedded between two structural layers, a polyimide (PI) film and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer, with distinct thermal expansion properties. Assisted by the direct patterning capabilities of EHD printing, a skewed heater pattern was designed and printed. This skewed heater pattern not only produces a skewed parallelogram-shaped temperature field, but also changes the stiffness anisotropy of the actuator, leading to twisting deformation with coupled bending. A theoretical kinematic model was built for the twisting actuator to describe its twisting deformation under different actuation effects. Based on that model, influence of design parameters on the twisting angle and motion trajectory of the twisting actuator were studied and validated by experiments. Finite element analysis (FEA) was utilized for the thermal and deformation analysis of the actuator. The fabricated twisting actuator was characterized on its heating and twisting performance at different supply voltages. Using three twisting actuators, a soft gripper was designed and fabricated to implement pick-and-place operations of delicate objects.

Abstract Mechanism path generation problems which use link deformations to improve the design lead to optimization problems involving a nonlinear sum-of-squares objective function subjected to a set of linear and nonlinear constraints. Inclusion of the deformation analysis causes the objective function evaluation to be computationally expensive. An optimization method is presented which requires relatively few objective function evaluations. The algorithm, based on the Gauss method for unconstrained problems, is developed as an extension of the Gauss constrained technique for linear constraints and revises the Gauss nonlinearly constrained method for quadratic constraints. The derivation of the algorithm, using a Lagrange multiplier approach, is based on the Kuhn-Tucker conditions so that when the iteration process terminates, these conditions are automatically satisfied. Although the technique was developed for mechanism problems, it is applicable to any optimization problem having the form of a sum of squares objective function subjected to nonlinear constraints.
